26" to 700c MTB drop bar conversion(pics)
Picked this Gary Fisher Big Sur up on the Bookface market sans wheels and seatpost/saddle for $20. It had a decent spec of 3x9 deore LX shifters,XT rear and LX font derailleurs,STX RC crank and Rock Shox Judy XC fork.Originaly was looking for a 29er to do this with. Built with all spare parts and a few taken off of another bike I have. BB is about an inch higher than it would be with 26" wheels and 2.2 tires. The fork is made for 700c wheels and has about 2 1/2 inch shorter axel to crown than the Rock Shox Judy that was on it. This is mostly just me experimenting with the build because i got it so cheap and wanted something to occupy my time. I bought it knowing it might be a complete waste of time but like i said,it was only $20 and I know I can clean the parts up and flip them for more than i paid.
Parts list.
Frame: Gary Fisher Big Sur
Fork: Kona P2 700c Aluminum
Headset: FSA MX Pro
Stem: Answer ATAC
Handlebars: FSA Adventure Flaired
Levers: TRP RRL
Wrap: Cinelli Mash Volee
Brakes: Tektro 559 with Clarks MTB pads
Cables and housing: Jagwire braided
Wheels: Formula sealed track laced to unbranded rims from Trek Soho S
Tires: Continental Cyclocross Race 700x35
Crank: Bontrager Nebula
Chainring: Shimano 105 42t
BB: Shimano Un-53
Pedals: Nukeproof Evolution sealed
Chain: KMC 710 Kool
Freewheel: Shimano 17t/Excess Components 16t
Saddle: Felt OEM takeoff
The seatpost is just wedged in with cardboard and not staying on the bike because its only a 27.2 and I need a 31.6 and a 34.9 collar.
Not too bad for 20 bucks so far. I can pick up a post and collar on Ebay for around $25 so Ill have less than $50 invested when its done.
I havent even taken it for a test ride yet because of the seatpost issue.

Nice job! I'm working on a similar build, trying to spend as least as possible, and either make everything or make the old parts look good! Dig the raw look, and big ol' knobbies! Going to fabricate a frame soon and leave it raw for sure.

Thank you. I think the biggest problem I'll have is that this has the Genisis geometry than gives it a longer top tube and shorter chainstays. The TT is about 3 inches longer than my SS road conversion. If it doesn't work out with the reach being so long I'll just put some risers on it and be done, maybe do a 1x9 gearing.
