The Tour de Tasmanie GT starts on Sunday!

This is a "hell week" - like event.

17 Feb 6am 200km Overnight Control: Freycinet Peninsula.
18 Feb Day Off: Freycinet Peninsula.
19 Feb 5am 300km Overnight Control: Deloraine.
20 Feb Day Off: Deloraine.
21 Feb 5am 400km
22 Feb 8am 400km Overnight Control: Launceston
23 Feb Day Off: Launceston. National Penny Farthing Championships, 10am-4pm, Evandale.
24 Feb 5am 600km Overnight Control: Queenstown.
25 Feb 9pm 600km Ride Finish, The Whaler, Battery Point.


There are a collection of riders from Australia, USA, and a few other places. We will be watching them travel around, and then Rowan and I will be at the finish back in Hobart to welcome them in.

If you've got friends over here, you can watch them too.

I know someone that was going to ride until the airlines lost his bike. Might catch up to him though.

I think the airline has found his bicycle and if all goes well, it might get over here in time.

Otherwise he's looking at borrowing one.


EDIT: Just hear that it has arrived. We'll be seeing him, and the others shortly.

They'll be off and riding tomorrow morning ... in just under 7 hours.

For most people, this probably doesn't mean much, but it was a major privilege for me yesterday afternoon to turn up to the vollies briefing, and (re)meet some of the riders as they turned up for their later meeting, including the guy mentioned in this thread. He is one of the legends of this type of riding whom I met also on a prevent Tasmanian event.

The event director, Andrew, also is someone who has done another wonderful job in assembling the format and vollies to do what is happening... and I am happy to be a ringer of the now familiar cow bell (sourced unbelievably in France on one of our trips) at the finish of the 600km event.

After reading this thread I did a google search for the ride and wow. Impressive. There are some photos linked to the registration page and it looks like an incredible ride. Definitely not for the faint of heart, but wow. A nice epic ride. Congrats to everyone who signs up for the ride.

Rowan and I have ridden many of those roads ... Rowan more than me, of course because he has lived here most of his life.

It is definitely a ride I would love to participate in. Not something I could do off the couch mind you, especially considering they have 'qualifier' requirements. But as you say @Machka, a lot of climbing!

Looks like everyone who started the 300K finished it within 18 hours. This was their "easy" ride.

We're not riding ... we're vollies at the last control on the 600K, back in Hobart.

However, we might see some of them today, on the last rest day before the 600K.
