Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"Flat spot" on wheel

Hello everyone,

I've had my 2018 Specialized Roubaix for nearly a year now but am still learning as a relatively new "serious" bike guy. My LBS noticed I had a flat spot on one of my wheels. He trued the disc brake and said it should be fine. To tell you the truth I don't even notice anything. Should I be concerned? When should I think about new wheels?
Thank you so much!
Steve

What does the brake disc have to do with a flat spot in the wheel?

This is confusing. You true a wheel if it's sort of wobbly side to side. You true a rotor if it's bent (ie not flat) running the brake pads. But a flat spot on the wheel??

It is real and I’ve had it happen to me. The wheel has a spot that flattens out instead of being perfectly round.

Not quite sure what you are saying but if you can't notice anything and the LBS said it is ok, it probably is.

THIS is where the question is. How does the brake disc have ANYTHING to do with a flat spot in the wheel? Apparently I'm not the only one who is confused.

Before you think about new wheels, there are several things to check or clarify.

First, is the flat spot on the tire? If so, a new tire would fix that if it's really bad and/or you are concerned about it.

If it's not the tires, ask your LBS what they meant by flat spot on the wheel, and how does that interfere with the disc brake. I think they probably told you that your wheel is out of true at one spot which causing the brake rub, but I would definite clarify with them. If that's the case, truing the wheel should take care of it.

Did you fix it by truing the disc brake?

What’s a flat spot on the “wheel”? The rim had a flat spot, or do you mean the rear tire has been worn to the point where the center tread is somewhat flat?
