BTW...I always tour with a plastic fork. Lighter than any steel or aluminum fork I have found. A Ti work would be lighter, but I cannot justify the cost.

OH !, shame on you. Klein’s were the finest aluminum bikes ever made, they weren’t noodly like Vitus nor stiff and unforgiving like Cannondale and the like, they rode just like........well just like carbon.

What are you going to do? Some people have a lot of self-loathing.

As I recall, you got it on sale at Walmart, right?

I'm ducking, now.

The first bikes were made out of wood; wood is mostly carbon. Easiest bike to recycle, too; when it falls apart you just extract the metal parts and sell 'em to the blacksmith, then burn the rest in your fireplace.

Yep. It cost $300. It was the $6,000 pedals I was forced to also purchase that set me back some. So much so I actually had to settle for filet mignon for a week. Tough time in my life.

Outside of competitive cycling, I prefer steel or titanium for the following reasons:

- will likely last decades
- you don't have to worry as much about over-tightening if you don't have access to a torque wrench for on the road / on tour repairs
- price is typically less (not always).

I prefer steel because every decent deal I've gotten on a bike outside my fatty turned out to have a steel frame.

Plus, it boggles the minds of carbon bike riders....

Note, they said straight out , factory built in North Africa,
So, used lower labor costs in Tunisia, outside the EU, and non Union ..

it is hand labor intensive.. so companies look for cheaper hands..

And shoppers look for cheaper bikes ...

Look is not one on the low end..

All of these technologies are ancient.

3D-printed graphene is where it's at!

(I'll take 3D-printed titanium or magnesium as well)

Hum... I'll consider carpet fiber bikes when Co Motion makes em. Their return policy is killer - you can drop their bikes off of 200 foot bridges and get a full refund I hear

They also say Hi Tensile is making a comeback and I'm stoked cause I've got a stockpile of the stuff.

What was that all about? I have a vague recollection of it.
