SRAM Rival Crank 2008 vs 2009
I'm putting together a 92/93 Merckx steel road bike with modern components. I was going to be putting SRAM Rival 2009 on it.
I notice that the SRAM 2008 Rival Crankset is listed at a much cheaper price than the 2009 Rival (<$100 vs $150 or so). Also, the 2008 model is actually lighter.
Are there significant differences in stiffness (because of weight difference), other benefits on the 2009, or is the 2009 Rival just a black colored 2008 model that is heavier and costs more?

The 2009 version is hollow and that is whay it is lighter...don't know about a stiffness difference but they should have been able to make it just as stiff if they did their homework.

this is cycling we're talking about, of course there's a good reason the 2009 crank is 150 dollars more! I heard the 2008 crank will knock 3mph off your avg speed... or was it that the 2009 would ADD 3mph to your average... oh wait no, the 2009 crank is so intensely stiff, your sprint will go twice as fast! the 2008 is like a wet noodle! that's why the strongest pro guys sponsored by sram were using 2008 rival crank instead of red/force this year...

So I guess I will go with the 2008 crankset. Again, this is going on a beater/winter training bike from 1992 lol. I'll be sprinting from the bears; sadly they run faster than I sprint

you made the right choice.. a bear could easily chomp a carbon crank arm in half.

Yeah, I made a mistake. I guess the 2009 crank is just hollowed-out 2008 with a nice coat of black paint. Ordered the 2008.
Rest of the Rival stuff besides the brifters are pretty similar in price. That's why I was asking. Thanks all for the help

The 2009 crank is lighter and stiffer. Whether that's worth $50 is up to you. I have the 2009 Rival crank, and it's great.

Here's a little info on the different types of Rival cranksets.
- 2008 Rival (non-OCT) w/ solid crankarms (854g)
- 2008 Rival OCT w/ hollow crankarms (830g) - limited production and used by a few professional cyclists
- 2009 Rival OCT w/ hollow crankarms (830g) - Just a color difference between the 2008 OCT and 2009 OCT

What's REALLY funny, is that the SRAM Red cranks costs us (LBS) about $50 LESS than a Force crank. The difference, of course, is that the Force comes with a BB and the Red doesn't. Yeah....I think I'll step up to the Red, thanks. (These are 2008 prices) Just the cranks w/no BB for either? $9 difference. Who in their right mind would buy the Force over the Red???
As for the OP.... The 2009 Rival group is a good choice. They've improved Rival tremendously; so much so that it's hard to justify spending the extra for Force. The shifters are much better this year. I'll be riding a Rival bike this year as well. If I decide to keep it at the end of the season, I'll probably upgrade it to Red. Unless I really, really like the Rival stuff. It's hard being a bike ****, it really is.
