She wasn't like most celebrities who threw a leg over a saddle only for publicity pictures. I recall a charity fashion show that she did in the early 1970s, where instead of walking down a runway, she entered the stage on a 1890s bicycle (or tricycle or quadricycle), stopped to pose, then rode off. She had a different bicycle for each outfit and there may have been about ten or twelve in total.

Here's a picture of Miss day, circa 1950 with her son, Terry Melcher, who grew up to become a prominent producer with Columbia Records. He produced records for the Mamas & Papas, Beach Boys, Glen Campbell and several others. Most importantly, he was instrumental in the early success of the Byrds, helping them develop their folk rock sound and producing their first two albums. Melcher was also the original, intended target in the Manson-Tate murders.
It's funny how things seem to line up. I did a wiki crawl due to this post reading about the murders, and Roman Polanski, and today...

Might be. The shifts levers are very long and metal, so Huret was my first thought. However, they have hoods, complicating a positive identification. The crankset appears to a Magistroni. The brakeset looks like Universal 61. The photo was reportedly taken in 1968, around the time of the Big Pink sessions, so the bicycle should be no newer than that.

Great lady...she also advocated against cruelty to animals in the film industry which makes her a hero in my book.

Having 10 or 12 bicycles also counts as a big plus!

Huh? All I see is the back end of a bike and Garth's legs!
Pic is from the Basement Tapes so you are right about the timing.
Btw as an aside, RR's memoir is a fun read if that period and music interests you.

Yes, Miss Day was a huge activist for the humane treatment and welfare of all animals, not just by the film industry. It occupied the majority of her time after retirement in the mid-1970s. She founded two animal welfare organizations, was the driving force behind Spay Day and the major contributor to a horse welfare facility. She did public service announcements for the Humane Society and in the mid-1980s had a talk show focusing on celebrities, their pets and animal welfare. She also owned one of the first pet-friendly hotels. This probably only scratches the surface, as she reportedly conducted a lot of a animal rescues on her own, at her own expense.

I've seen other pictures of this bicycle. No, I haven't read Robertson's memoirs, yet. I do have an interest in the music of this era and The Band and are high on my list, both artistically and because of high CANCON.

Yeah, plenty of stories about that and much more in the memoir. Kind of tragic but what a pool of talent.

No photos, but Ben Horne waxed poetic about his spray painted Schwinn in the last episode of Twin Peaks for a good 5 minutes.

You have to give credit to Janet being able to still smile at the camera while sitting in that surely very uncomfortable/painfully basket on the front of that bike......
And to try and look game about looking like she's towing that old geezers butt around behind her bike, with his hand raised as if telling her where to go....
What women had the be subjected to just to look "cute" back then is unbelievable.

American actress Barbara Britton (1918-1980). One time mayor of Hollywood. Spokesperson for Revlon cosmetics. Unlikely to get far unless she pulls up that propstand. Image dated 1942.

I have no clue of these people but its pretty funny.

It took me a while to find it but that's silent film star Viola Dana and Maurice "Lefty" Flynn on the set of the 1924 film, Open All Night. Viola plays a bored Parisian wife who becomes infatuated with a macho star of the six day bicycle racing circuit. Despite the description, it's actually a comedy.
