I imagine that they will be the slightest bit flexible and smooth out vibration better than stock. I'll have to see. It's going to be hit or miss right now testing them out on the road with the winter weather. But, whenever the roads are dry and it's 20F out (or maybe less) I'll be out. I'll have pictures of the install in my build thread. Hopefully, this weekend.

Change of tyres
So, here we go, I got new tyres on it today. Does it still look like an hybrid? I actually want to just go more and more offroad with it… You guys think that will be ok with this Trek DS 8.4? Or should I go and buy a real MTB?

Do you want to go riding through the back country, carving your own path, going down rocky cliffs and full speed over root covered dirt paths in the forest? If yes, get a real mountain bike.
Do you want to be able to cut across a grassy field or hit a mud puddle now and then? Maybe ride on a gravel path? Jump off a curb and have a softer landing? If that's your goal, this bike is probably fine for now.

That's cool. Once I get new wheels I may set up the stock wheels with nobbies.
Well, that plan changed. I'm putting the 4Seasons on the stock wheels for Winter use and building a different set up for the rest of the year. Maybe when the 4Seasons wear out I'll get some sort of mild trail type tires.

Do you want to go riding through the back country, carving your own path, going down rocky cliffs? If yet, get a real mountain bike.

The tires and wheels will be fine, as will your frame and brakes and geometry. Your biggest liability for "real" off-road is the front suspension fork. I'm not against suspension forks (I have two hybrids with them), but the forks found on hybrids like these aren't meant for rigorous use. It probably has just 63mm of travel and will likely bottom and top out pretty often if the going is rough enough (which will eventually cause problems).

I undid a couple of things - a front urban rack/basket (too bulky) and an adjustable stem. Then changed the rear rack to something lighter and better looking and installed a smaller front rack.

Yeah. I'm sure it's lighter than it looks but like you say, just too unwieldy. The other pictures with the panniers on are pretty sweet.

Could you post some pics or start a thread on your handlebar setup? It looks like you have a pair of "typical" MTB bar ends PLUS drop bar ends as well? Or are they integrated into one unit? I'm interested to see what that looks like close up. Thank you!

After a long 10 day Florida “winter” I got out on the trail on the Surly, it finally got into the 70s, what a great day. Rode a nice 60 plus miles on the Pinellas Trail, and ended my Beer & Taco day at Hooters. Gotta love Florida weather !

Ideally, I'd put the standard ends inside the grips and levers, but the shape of the levers won't allow it.
