I don't know if there is an official thread for this or not, so I'm starting one. Show off your Colnago bicycles with the glorious Red, as 1982 UCI World Champion Giuseppe Saronni has here:



Nothing more inspiring than seeing a World Champion on a trade card!



He rode with Campagnolo 50th Anniversary components too. Not collecting dust in a case!

A 1982 Colnago Mexico that has been re-painted. The components are pretty much as Saronni would have used on his 'Campagnolo 50th anniversary' bike.

I had one and restored it some time back. I even rode it a bit after the restoration. I later sold it to a dude in the UK - right back where it started from, because it was the very last bike (frame/fork) I acquired during my two year London duty. Unhappiness at the result of the restoration was the main reason I passed it on.

Before I disassembled it and re-purposed or sold the parts it had full pantographing. Yes, the pump was painted and decaled to match the frame:

It’s kind of interesting around this forum when people ask about Saronni, or what it means. But Colnago did make these with the Saronni brand around the mid-1980s. Were any made elsewhere?

Yup. The originals crack, but at the time I was looking for a certain look. I still use complementary-colored Bullseye pulleys on bike builds here and there.

I know last year, there was a nice thread introduced regarding Saronni bicycles and Saronni Colnago bicycles, so I am inserting this thread here:

You’ll notice many had posted before about these bikes. But still, there’s a Tommasini Lounge, one for 3 Speed English Bicycles, and some others, like Bianchi. But the cool thing is, (unless you correct me!) there isn’t one for the Saronnis. Now there are true bicycle historians on this forum, and my hope is more people can show their appreciation toward these bikes for their places in bicycle history. Classic bikes, classic riders, and classic style!

I was looking for a late 70's orange Colnago Super to replace mine that was stolen when I found this 1983 Super frame. Loved the red color.



I built it up as a frankenbike with components that I had on hand, Campy wheels, seatpost and FD. The rest were components that I like using.

Speaking of Beepe, off topic photo of the Raleigh team bikes headed to the starting line at the 1982 Worlds. Note the silver Eddy Merckx bikes in the mix. I was told that it was friendly cooperation.

Honestly, you don't see many cycling teams with that style anymore. There was a certain level of cool going on back then and no one really knew it.

Is that a 61cm? What components do you have on your bike?

I restored this frame a couple of years ago. @Drillium Dude Jeff dates the frame from around 1984 because the down tube has 4 crimps in it vs. 2 crimps for the original 1983 Nuovo Mexicos. Jeff supplied the seat post for this build, and @gugie aligned the fork for me. The bike rides great and has quicker steering than my 1976 Colnago Super. The frame Geometry is steeper and the top tube is shorter than my 1976 Super. I normally ride a 54 cm frame center to top with a 54 cm top tube, which are the dimensions of my 1976 Super. This frame is a 55 cm center to top with a 54 cm top tube. My son says it is one of his favorite bikes in my collection and he looks forward to riding it.... I guess it is a family heirloom now?

I just want to go on record saying I think this thread is cruel. I have a pretty short wish list of bikes I'd like to have, and a Saronni Red Colnago is very near the top of the list. There is usually one available, of course, but not at a price I'd be comfortable with. I finally gave up and bought a white Colnago, thinking I could always have it repainted some day. (I won't pollute this thread with a picture, but if you're curious it's here.)

I used to have a Pinarello that I believe would accurately have been described as Saronni red, though maybe attaching "Saronni" to anything other than a Colnago would be like calling anything other than a Bianchi celeste. I let that one go because it was too small, but I still miss seeing that beautiful color in my garage. Once in a while, I have to look at pictures of the ridiculous stem I had on that bike to convince myself that I did the right thing.

Here is the former @Andy_K Pinarello. It now lives with my Red Colnago in Durango as my Italian fender bike for those wet riding days. It also rides as good as it looks. Thank you from one Andy to another!
