I appreciate all the advice guys. I'm a newby and need it. I ride every day and have for several months. It might only be 10 miles around the neighborhood at 9PM after I come in from work and get a shower but I have only missed a few days in more than 6 months. Once for a week when I was very sick from heat exhaustion after a bad incident last summer and only a couple days other than that have I not been on the bike. I absolutely love riding the bike. It's my mental and physical therapy.I also ride 20+ miles on my off days. Going bikepacking this weekend with my 10 year old son. I've begun to plan a short trip along the Natchez Trace close to home here and I am always looking for any bike only trail or road to travel.

I don't know your situation with regards to where you live and work but many people use commuting as a way of getting in more miles and as training. A 10 mile commute twice a day can be a good workout. If you live too far from work to ride the whole way, drive part way and ride.

This keeps me in decent shape for touring. I live about 30 miles from work, and drive halfway, ride halfway. For my last trip in September along the Oregon Coast, I did a weekend trip of 170 miles in advance to tune up the legs. Had no problem jumping right into a weeklong trip with a fair amount of climbing.
