Planned on doing a ride today but woke up and the neighbor's fence was down. Debris everywhere, trees rattlin' and a rollin'. Had a split second doubt there for a short moment.

But dang it, it's New Years Day I want to ride. Did a solo 35 miler. Low average but hey, I got out there and rode my bike this first day of the year!

Who else rode in this wind today?

Left the house just before 10:30, got home just before 1.



Any time I had to turn to the north was absolutely brutal. Crosswinds when heading west (downhill) were almost as bad. It was Palm Frond-palooza out there.

But tomorrow is forecast for 3mph from the NNE, gusting to 7mph. I'm 100% okay with that.

was hoping to toss off a 25-miler but gave up after 16 miles. today was a solid reminder as to why i gave up on my old cold weather jacket and had been just layering like a mutha.
tossing that cold weather jacket and getting a new one.

Did 35 miles. Left the house @ 9 headed north/northeast. Crosswinds in Brea/YL hills were pretty bad but had a nice 15 miles of tailwind back home!

Ahh, I went the opposite direction. Headed south (living north) with the wind then back north into the headwind to finish it off. Good workout leaving the coast pushing hard doing 9 MPH.

27 miles on the coast between Carlsbad and Del Mar. Windy AF here too and not many cyclists out. It was like pedaling underwater, but it rained yesterday and were itching to take out the newly converted dog chariot.




I believe this was on our Saturday ride on the other blue dog chariot.

Checked and re-checked the weather report-- no appreciable wind in or around my starting point... then rode where I hadn't planned on riding. Only had stiff head/crosswind from the north for about three hours of a four hour adventure. Winds averaged about 15mph, gusts into the high 30s. Got maybe 20 minutes of actual tailwind. Sigh.

Yeah, but I bet you covered some serious miles in those 20 minutes.
It's like riding up Pikes Peak: a little over two hours to to the top, and well under half an hour to get back.

Eh, it was all kind of oblique. I never got that real "pusher" right-from-behind wind. I used all that up last Friday, when I let these very same high desert winds blow me all the way from home to the Pacific Ocean-- 75 miles in 3h9m @ 23.7mph. Now it would appear that the universe seeks to achieve balance.

I remember years ago, back then, maybe 1992, you would fight the wind one way 20 miles or so, then blow you back with a full on tailwind for 20 or so.

Then came El Nino! Then the wind was all over the place. Couldn't count on a tailwind at all.

El Nino and now the rain. That means afterwards the mountains will be snow capped and the sky will be blue with the cold crisp air. That's how I remember winters in So Cal.

I think the snow looks a lot prettier from down here. Once a buddy and I rode our mountain bikes up GMR on a day it was supposed to rain. We were at the shack and it started snowing. I was like, "I'm getting the heck outta here!". Then the hail started really hard on the descent making it hard to see and that stuff hurts! Got down to Newman's Point before it stopped. Wouldn't want to get trapped up there in the snow. it's freezing!
