88' Bianchi Giro is almost ready to sprint to the finish line

It all started November 9th 2017 when @Flog00 posted this bicycle frame for a year identification. It took me 2 days till i saw the thread and instantly decided I had to add it to my stable. A few PMs, texts, money exchanges, and roughly 8 months wait the Bianchi Giro arrived at my doorstep.

(I dont want to get into specifics regarding the 8 month wait)

I was very excited to get started on building this frameset. With the help from Scott (flog00) adding some extra parts in the deal I added a part every few weeks. Going with a full Record/Super Record it came together over a few months and its just been a great journey throughout. Hunting down parts here on BF, eBay, Offerup, CL etc etc was all part of the thrill and seeing how it currently sits 90% completed I'm 1000% happy.

A few decisions to make in the next day or 2 regarding bar tape and tire choice will wrap up the build. I was especially satisfied with the cable housing my LBS installed on it last night. Has the look of the vintage steel cable housing but the performance of modern cable. Pic provided.

Id like to thank anyone and everyone who has sold me a part towards this build or any other build. I couldnt have gotten to this point without all the help from BF members.

Now to the pictures.

Ill take bar tape color suggestions

I second the navy blue, or at least a blue that's close to the decal color.

Would also suggest lopping off 2-3 inches of cable and housing & running the cables behind the bars.

Nice job!

I third the Royal Blue match, and can tell you it looks better after you ride it, Celeste bar tape, even with gloves, doesn't look nice very long. It would also look too monochromatic.

Don't forget gumwall tires. I crammed 28mm into Vittorias into mine. After I almost died mounting them, I wished I had sprung for Compass.

Ride it like you re-built it!

Very nice! I have an '89 Giro, I went a bit nuts with celeste bar tape and striped tires but used red cable housing and cages to break it up a bit. Blue tape would look great too.

@rccardr I actually had my LBS reroute the cables when I picked it up last night from back to front. Ive always preferred the front of bar routing method. Simply looks cleaner and symmetrical. Thank you though for the tip.
@wgscott I was thinking Vittoria Corsa G tyres since i can get them for $80 a pair from probikekit

Unanimous decision for navy blue so far

The blue in the logo isn't navy, it's royal, and that should be the tape color as well. Gonna be a sweet ride!

Since you have a Celeste saddle, I’d go with the blue tape. Nice looking ride!

Blue, since you have the seatpost paint as such, it makes my choice for it as well.

@Fahrenheit531 is right. Royal Blue is what you want. Navy looks black.

I had the Royal Blue version of that saddle (it came with the bike), but I wore it out over the years, and it started to come apart at the back within the first year or two. I finally replaced it with a blue B17, but if someone knows of a better Royal Blue (or similar) option ....

I like blue because as I said the in the other thread it helps pop the decals and doesn't show the dirt much. But it's up to you.

'97 Ti MegaTube black cables with Celeste tape.

Especially on this bike, '90 Campione de Specialissma Mondo X5 Gimondi Rekord, the blue tape makes the decals more noticeable, at least I think so, and hemp sidewalls keep the wheels from looking too dark. Summer of '09 in N.J.

'83 Nuovo racing Celests cables and tape

I really couldn't decide on this '88 Trofeo and I had one roll of each so I did both.

Beautiful build Miguel @malcala622! I can imagine how excited you must be to be a couple steps away from competing a killer looking/riding bike.

If it were mine, I’d consider white bars. High maintenance to keep clean, I know. But there is just enough white highlight in the decals that it’d probably blend. And I think it’d support that light, fast, airy appeal that the bike proclaims!

What ever choose, it’ll look great, and I’m looking forward to seeing it then!

1988 Giro

I got my 1988 all original Bianchi Giro with a Campy Victory gruppo on eBay. It probably had around a hundred miles on it (only ridden on Sundays by a little old lady).

Original eBay picture from 2007.

BB shows 1988.

All matchy-matchy with Celeste tape and cable housing.

I love the Celeste examples shown in this thread (mine is metallic brown / charcoal), but since Edoardo Bianchi translates roughly as "Edward White," it would be cool to see some white Bianchis, as well.

Agreed on the royal blue tape, but tires and tubes seem to be missing. It could be the camera angle. But I'm pretty sure you can fix that.

I think you made the right call with the royal blue tape. It's gonna really bring out the blue in the decals, seatpost, and the saddle script. Although, I will say, I'm kinda in love with the celeste explosion on @verktyg 's Bianchi too. To be honest, probably can't go wrong either way.

I would however go with the suggestion to route the cables behind the bars even though you prefer them in front. Any time I see a bike with front routed cables I cringe a little but maybe that's just me...

Absolute beauty nontheless, congrats on a great build and have fun riding!

+1 with routing the brake cables behind your bars, as your stem has a long enough extension that it justifies it.
I also cringe when I see front brake cables front brake getting pushed forward and almost causing the cable to almost kink at the caliper cable stop. A smooth arc to the front brake cable stop would be better for smoother brake actuation plus the cable contacting the bars can cause them to rattle against it on rough roads, which can be irritating. Look at the pics of other bikes on this thread with the cables routed to the back of the bars and you can see how much smoother it looks.

@Chombi1 the issue i have with routing behind the bars is ive had the rear brake cable flaring out too much. It created asymmetrical loops.

Ive never had any problems routing cables this way so im leaving them as.

Thank you though for your input
