Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just got into road cycling and bought my first new Trek, an Emonda SL6. I've been working on restoring a pair of old Treks lately; a 1991 Single Track 970 and a 1999 Multi Track 700. Hopefully I'll get around to posting some pictures when the weather clears up.

I just added fenders to my Trek 1.1 for rides in the rain... and they look pretty cool. I thought they would look dorky. Pics forthcoming.

Fenders should add to my Fred-cred.

This is mine! Trek Alpha 1.2 2011. Low end road bike

I only changed the tape to a blue lizard skins one and I got rid of the bontrager stem (on the pic) to get a 140mn FSA one

Trek 1.1 with fenders.

This bike has 3 strikes against it:

1. It's a Trek
2. It has Gatorskin tires
3. It has Fenders

I put fenders on mine during the winter. This is an old pic:

The PDW fenders are really good looking. Also much higher quality than any of the plastic ones.

I scrolled through 16 pages of this thread and I didn't see a single shark fin Madone.
I guess I have to post mine!

No idea how to post a picture into the thread. I guess a link will have to do.

New build I'm in the middle of working on that I'm pretty excited about - will update with additional picture when it's in its final form.
New Stem; new chainring; considering power meter too.

Which is what I did. I went from the Emonda SLR to the Domane and to be honest the difference is not huge as you may think. The Domane is a bit more compliant on really rough roads but the Emonda was no slouch in the ride quality department. The Emonda MAY have climbed a bit better but enough for me to quantify that statement. In the end I wouldn't lose any money to make the switch unless you need just a little more relaxed geometry.

Thank you so much for that response. Domane SLR's aren't very easy to find in my area but I did test ride an SL6 which is what I was considering. My local routes are all smooth sailing so I think your reply just saved me over $1000 in the money I'd lose on the Emonda to upgrade.

thank you! i was having major FOMO (fear of missing out) since i went with an emonda sl6 even though i wanted a dual iso-shock domane. the price i paid for my emonda made it a no brainer which was the ultimate deciding factor in my decision.

now i need to get aeolous 5 wheels. your bike looks gorgeous with them! and the tired definitely make the black pop. excellent execution.

Lol I was in the same boat. I got a set of Vision Metron 40 take-offs from the SL6 Pro and threw them on my SL6 Emonda but I want a set of Aeolus 3's or Zipp 202's.

Has anyone managed to convince Trek to ship home and not a dealer?

I'd love to build my Madone the next time I get the new gen.
Store experience always irritates me. No one cares for your stuff like you would.

Building a Madone would involve a bit of a learning curve. They are not as straight forward as the average bike.
I always wrench on my own bikes but admit that if involves cabling or similar I take my Madone to the shop. Just can't be bothered messing around with all the internal/hidden cables and strange brakes.
I am sure it isn't difficult just a few tricks to it.

Very unlikely in the extreme. If a dealer sells an new unbuilt Trek to a customer, Trek will very likely pull their dealer status if they find out about it. They're quite strict about it.
