All blackboards used to have spell check built in. The problem is that the software hasn't been loaded for the past two generations...

Thoreau never said that.

He died in 1862. The Velocipede (Boneshaker) wasn't introduced until the next year and the high-wheeler until a decade later. The safety bicycle was introduced in the 1880's, twenty years after his death.

The actual quote is about fishing...

"Many men fish all their lives without ever realizing that it is not the fish they are after."

Even this quote is mis-attributed to Thoreau. It never appears in any of his writings.

At least with fish, it actually might mean something. Fishing is so clearly associated with the goal of catching fish that it makes a point to say people are really out to commune with nature. Cycling isn't necessarily associated with miles, and a lot of it is done in urban areas that would have nothing to do with nature.

cycling & fishing relate by serving an opportunity to better health. Whether it's for nutrition or mental wellbeing, that's up to that individual.

" Fishing is so clearly associated with the goal of catching fish"

Had I only known this when I was an avid fisherman, I might have caught more fish than shuteye!

OTOH, the fish connection to fishing is at least implied by, y'know, the name of the activity. But you took me out of context, the point I was making was saying people fish not for catching fish actually means something. You are just confirming it was true.

I don't think most people who ride bikes think they are doing it to rack up miles.

That makes sense, the op pic doesn't. It associates bikes with miles. Most people I know irl who ride do it to get somewhere like work or school.

Thank you for this correction it makes lot of sense you are a well read man. I took this photo in front on my local bike shop and would of been quoting Thoreau for the rest of my life.

When I fish I know I’m after the fish I want those fresh filets with Cajun seasoning and straight into the deep fryer. With some hush puppies and an ice cold beer.

I once caught a modest 12" rainbow trout in the Mad River in VT using a giant Red Devil spoon type lure using my surf casting rod/reel. basically by knowing where the trout was hunkering down & I just kept annoying the heck out of it, until it bit. that was a good breakfast. my buddy cooked it cuz had had done so before. but it really annoyed my buddy cuz he was gonna show me how it was done with his regular tried & true routine at that fishing spot but he caught nothing that morning. we kinda went for the fish

They say a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work, any day. Not sure if I can say the same thing about cycling. A bad day of cycling could mean you're done, permanently.

The new wireless fishing reel from Shimano can't catch a thing! I prefer my old school downtube reel.

And don't get me started on my tubeless disc reel...

A bad day fishing could also result in a similar permanent situation... Boat fire out in the ocean + sharks = derp
