Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

scion hatchback and a road bike

I need to get a new car and I'm looking seriously at the scion Xd, does anyone have one? Does a roadbike fit in back with the seats down?

Looks iffy, but probably possible if you take both wheels off.

Take your bike the the car yard and try it.

I have the slightly older model xB, the bike fits pretty well with seats down and front wheel off.

I don't know anyone with an xD but they look nice.

I once made a cardboard template representing my bike and took it to a Suzuki dealership. I wanted to see if two mountain bikes could stand up inside an Aerio. They could.
Your road bike should fit fine in that Scion.
You may not even need to remove the front wheel. Just turn the bars.

It fits fine with the front wheel off. Be very careful, because it is easy to scratch the bumper and the inside of the hatch with the forks. My wife loves hers...

I have an 08 xB and with the front wheel off I can lay a bikedown inside pretty easily....I think I have even had 2 in there at one point. That said I got a hitch for mine and use a hitch rack for my bikes most times.

Thanks guys, I've been using my old mountain bike, with bolt frame-wheel attachments. Coupled with the extreme weight of the bike and fitting it all in there it barely fits (I have to move my driving seat forward, dangerous, rarely do it.).

When I get my road bike (next month), I will easily be able to take the front wheel off and slide it in (lighter aswell).

Thanks

Chris

I can fit my 54cm in the Scion with no problem. If you have a larger frame you might have trouble.

I have a 2006 xB and my bike fits no problem with the wheels on. Just turn the front wheel 90 degrees and the tire fits behind the front seats.

Since you're still looking you might also consider the Mazda 3 hatchback.

I love mine and it holds my 58cm bike.

I was looking at that one as well but the gas mileage is not so good. I've heard they are awesome cars though.

Get a Honda Element instead. You can easily fit 4 road or MTB bikes inside with the wheels on. :-)

Mine's a 2006 2.3L 5-speed manual and it gets around 31-32 MPG on the highway. It's my commuter car...and yeah, it's an awesome car for the money. Very well put together and a blast to drive.

Good luck whatever you decide on!
