I am technically an undecided person of colour I guess.

At home I have adblocking, but today in the Dr's waiting room I thought it was amusing that I was getting motorcycling ads while looking at bikeforums on their WiFi.

Right below your sentence I see a google or facebook ad for "Gay Men In Color". And hell no have never searched for that madness. The internet is bizzare and creepy.

I've seen facebook once in my life. That was enough.

I use Chrome and my primary e-mail is Gmail, so yeah-- I get targeted ads. I don't understand people who are put off by ad targeting. I like it. It shows me things I'm probably interested in. I bought a couple cycling-related t-shirts via FB targeted ads, and bought a spare tire for my CX bike thanks to a bittersweet sidebar ad-- sweet in that the tire was crazy low priced on sale, bitter in that I had just bought one about a month before for about 25% more.

You're not thinking far enough ahead. This is how it all happens: There is no more aggressive takeovers like in times past. Nowadays it all happens gradually, and with barely a word of opposition.
Big Brother never needed to convince us to put implants into our bodies when the cell phone industry did it all for them. Even better, the bonus of connecting to everybody you connect to. And best of all, the individual citizen covers the cost! Now it that's not a Big Brother win, win I don't know what is. Isn't technology wonderful?

Well, here you are on the internet, playing their game. Hate to break it to all you conspiracy-minded folks: if you have even a shadow of an online presence, if you have any digital footprint whatsoever, you're in the game. The only way not to be a part is not to play at all.
On the other hand, i'm not narcissistic enough to think that all of my collected online data is valuable to anyone other than the marketers who produce targeted ads. My online life is every bit as pedestrian as my actual one. If the NSA is busily reading my emails and forum posts, better get those dudes some coffee. It ain't gonna be a thrill a minute.

No such problems here, but I'm pretty aggressive about filtering what FaceBook shoves at me (https://www.fbpurity.com), and I use a dedicated IMAP mail client for email (Mozilla Thunderbird) rather than a web browser.

Oh, let me tell you about how I don't use one form of social media while I'm here on this other form of social media. Ugh.
While I'm not here to defend Facebook, I will say that everyone I know doesn't live within a 20 mile radius of my house. I have a sister in Texas and a cousin in Pennsylvania. A buddy of mine moved to Finland. Facebook has its uses.

No Facebook since 2013. And, not particularly interested in rejoining Trump's Troll Farm.
