Bolt style rear axle , should washer sit inboard or out board of frame ?
Hi
Can anyone help me here .
I have removed a rear wheel which has the older bolt style fixing not the modern QR
There are a pair of washers on the axle right next to the axle bolt on both sides. Similar to where those lawyer tabs would sit in the assembly but these are not lawyer tabs just regular circular washers about 2.5mm thick.
Should these sit outside the dropouts against the nut or inside the dropout against the frame ?
Cant figure this out

Outside the frame.
The punch direction (sharp side) facing the frame, and the rounded side facing the nut.
The washers job is to allow the nut to be smoothly tightened without digging into the frame.
The locknut on the end of the axle is often stamped (knurled/patterned) with anti-rotation features to dig a little into the frame, when the wheel nuts on the outside of the frame are tightened.

Depends.
On a properly assembled and cared for bicycle, the washers should sit on the outside of the dropouts.
But it does happen that bikes bikes that has lived an ”interesting” life have rear wheels where washers on the inside is needed to make up for a spacing mismatch etc.
