Western New England Greenway

Hey, Im getting ready to ride from Norwalk CT up to Burlington VT and and a little sketched out about the roads the greenway has you on leaving Norwalk up to Cornwall. Has anyone out there done this ride and have any thoughts about the road?
Would also love to hear about the grades.

No idea, so will be interested in the responses you get.

But just thinking too bad there isn't a way to get from the Putnam division at Brewster, NY over to 7. The existent part of the Maybrook would get you to the state line, but from there into Danbury, I don't know... or skip the curve south and just set out on back roads from Carmel? Or that the Harlem Valley Rail trail just across the NY border doesn't have a lower section along the still-in-use tracks. Something that does go north that is a fairly nice ride is the Farmington Canal, though I admit I got a ride across the 10-mile road gap in the middle, and you'd still have to get from Westfield back towards your original route. Can't exactly take the Mass Pike...

It's both inspiring and aggravating, that there are nice ways to cover distances that look amazingly significant on a map of the area, but they don't quite connect through to actually going somewhere.

Many people who are helping to develop the Greenway are touring it now. But I expect you can get some help by going to the FB page where an information email can be found.

Unichris, I was encouraging the continuation of the Maybrooke to Danbury but I think it may take a change in city leadership in Danbury. A rail with trail would be a great solution In my opinion and a great route.

good luck

A Ride with GPS map of USBR 7 CT from Norwalk to the Mass. border shows 4,400 feet of elevation gain with a max. 8.9% grade, if that’s any help at all. The Greenway website has some contact info. but as suggested Facebook might be the best way to solicit comments from other riders....maybe a friend could post for you.

A touring couple that has been on the road for 8 months now stayed with us for 2 nights in June, here in Maryland. They were on the East Coast Greenway from SC all the way up here and continued on it all the way to Maine.

You can see their CycleBlaze journal here, and their Connecticut part starts here. Janet doesn't include maps and puts up more pictures than text, but she has given the ECG great grades all the way. You can message her on the CycleBlaze comment area and she'll reply eventually - they are in Michigan now.
