Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tough butt?

I am still pretty new to this sport and have been riding every chance I get. Recently though my ass has been hurting quite a bit. I have been riding out of the saddle alot to compensate wich is kind of tiring on my legs. I do wear the shorts, so that is not the problem.
Is there a time when your butt will toughen up. So it won't feel bruised and such?
Thanks

I've been riding a few years and I usually notice saddle pain only when I get a new saddle. How much are you riding (hours)?

Time in the saddle is huge for getting your butt used to riding. A new saddle (new type of saddle) usually takes about 1-2 weeks for me to break in but that is 150-300 miles for me. For alot of new riders 150-300 miles could take a month or two even.

As far as "wearing the shorts"....there are shorts and there are shorts. This is one area where I feel that not all shorts are created equal and not all shorts are created for your butt. I'd recommend investing in an expensive pair of shorts with a quality chamois. I personally love the chamois in Craft bibs but they only last for about a season. I have 3 pair a season and they run roughly $169 a pair.

You may need to adjust your saddle or buy a different one.

Do you want the good news? or the even better news? The good news is that after about a month or so- The butt and saddle should get adjusted to each other. The even better news is that riding out of the saddle for a year or so will improve the calf muscles.

Back in my racing days I would get really bad sores that would bleed after riding alot, mainly caused by bunched up chamois in my wool shorts. They would bother me for about a week or so and then eventually turn to calluses. Then there was no problem.
