Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cheap dog defense

I recently moved from Raleigh to about 20 miles east. This county does not have a leash law and some dogs roam at will. I have encountered a few large dogs so I decided to create a cheap mount and a baton. We had a local kid swerve away from a large dog that chased him into the roadway and was killed by a car about a year ago in this area.

The mount is two old reflector holders mounted together. I placed a small piece of rubber between the mount and seat post. The baton is an ASP collapsible baton. It's aluminum and 7.5" long but expands to 21" long with a steel ball on the tip. It's very light and should have little trouble turning away any dog that it hits.

I off set the mount to be able to draw it and not hit the seat.

I hope the animal was put down, and the owners held accountable.

I'm developing a strong distaste for "dog people".

Yes, I do own a dog. It's a responsibility that I take very seriously.

The Fury 15981 Slapper 11" SAP from Joy Enterprises are constructed of durable, heavy gauge leather that encases a molded lead weight and a built-in two-ply leather looped hand strap. The Fury Slapper is very versatile too. Besides being easier to conceal, it will allow a strike with the flat part which can range from stunning to instant KO, depending on place struck and size and weight of the slapper. The side edge can be used to target large muscle groups ( thighs, biceps, pecs, etc) or it can be used to break bones (high force concentration over a small area). Ideal for personal defense or public safety.

The baton is a bad idea that will likely cause you to crash. Try this stuff, absolutely will stop ANY dog in its tracks. 6 times stronger than HALT.

Pretty ignorant statement due to dogs attacking from the side. We also have a house at an apex with 1/4 mile of climbs on both sides, dog is at the top. He can run anyone here down no problem.

I have cracked a dog right in the snout with a large stick. No wreck and I was doing about 20 MPH when I hit him. I have used Capstun and MKIV (LEO stuff) Stream pepper spray would be OK, the cone stuff would hit the wife riding behind me.
