I was about to start my own thread but I found this. I was thinking about getting a good mud tire that can also be decent in gravel. I'm asking because I've entered the Paris to Ancaster gravel grinder (my first one) for next April and it is typically muddy. I've got the stock tires on my 2017 Giant Anyroad 1 but I'm getting new wheels in the new year and want to get something that will be good for the race.

I've heard good things about the Michelin Mud 2 and the Donnelly X'Plor MSO. Any other suggestions/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

The Terreno Wets are awesome from what I hear.

That's pretty the opposite end of the spectrum from mud tires. The SKs are terrible in mud.

But how much mud are we talking

I've just picked up a new bike with them on and hoping they'll cope with occasional bits of mud and hopefully just get me through those bits .... OP may be wanting more than that though.

I have GKSK 35s and I find them to be acceptable
for occasional mud. It’s been a wet fall and there’s lots of mud out on the trails here and I haven’t felt like I need to switch the tires out. IMO good technique goes a long way. If your ride is mostly dry with only short sections of mud then you’ll be fine, if it’s mostly mud with short sections of dry I’d switch to something else.

Im a big Vittoria fan. I'm running the Terreno dry's because Im on the road to/from where I ride the gravel/mud. The Dry's have a nice shoulder to run in gravel/mud but doesn't shed like the wets. But the wet's wont run on the road as nice as the Dry's do.

Vittoria makes a "plush" tire. Really nice feedback on the road and I think a little bit more of a cush ride with the compounds they use for the rubber. I would say I think they do tend to wear a little faster than other tires but the grip and the road response tends to be superior.

I know i went opposite of what i was looking for. I just would like narrower tire/wheel setup for my gravel needs.

SK's sometimes pack with mud here in the North Georgia red clay. They can become heavy and slippery.

It depends on conditions for me. No rain and mud on the ground is the worst.

A little bit of rain however, can loosen the consistency of the mud and the tires don't pack as much.

Generally, I'm usually not looking forward to running them in the rain.

The Terreno Mix comes in 33 and 38. Just in case you find the SK to be lacking.

I've had 2 outings on my Gravel King SK's now having had an awful lot of rain over the last 10 days and whilst it hasn't turned to the absolute gloop we had at the end of last winter following incessant rain ..... it's pretty wet out there at the moment but must admit I was presently surprised with how they handled it .... especially when I heard on more than one occasion one of the people following on a MTB with tyres to match screaming like a girlie when he hit a couple of patches I'd been through without any problem.

As Jazzguitar said though I ride over occasional mud and they cope but if my routes took me over lots of mud would probably consider an alternative.
