Mourning for the cycling world and for Bergamo: died on the evening of Friday 16 August Felice Gimondi.Born in Sedrina on September 29, 1942, he was 76 years old. World-famous cyclist, he was a professional from 1965 to 1979, a champion of great value, complete, capable of winning uphill, time trial and also in the sprint. He is one of seven riders to have won all three of the big rides: the Giro d'Italia (three times, in 1967, 1969 and 1976), the Tour de France (in 1965) and the Vuelta a España (in 1968) . He also won a World Championship in 1973.
Gimondi had an illness in the waters of Giardini Naxos, in Sicily, where he was on vacation with his wife Tiziana. All relief efforts were in vain, the Bergamo champion died in the late afternoon.
In his career the Bergamo player has won 143 victories as a professional, to which thirty or so students and amateurs are added. Bergamo-Celana was the first success for students on May 1st 1960; last the Cenaia Circuit on 3 August 1978. Among the most significant victories was the World Championship in 1973; the Tour de France 1965; three Giri d'Italia (1965, '67, '76); a Vuelta Espana (1968); a Paris-Roubaix (1966); a Milan-Sanremo (1974); two Paris-Brussels (1966, '76); two Giri di Lombardia (1966, '73); two Italian championships (1968, '72); two time trial Grand Prix of the Nations (1967, '68); a time trial Grand Prix of Lugano (1967); two Baracchi Trophies (1968 with Anquetil, 1973 with Rodriguez); a Tour of Romandie (1969). Just read about Felice’s passing, while checking Tour Tracker for news on Tour of Utah stage 3 and today’s stage 4. Sad to see another one of the heroes from my youth days following the European racing. God Speed Sr. Gimondi.

Thank you BG. The passing of one of the great and classy riders. (Would have been known far more widely and won far more races had he not been cursed with racing at the same time as the cannibal, Eddy Merckx.)

I was introduced to Gimondi by watching the classic Jorgen Leth Giro d'Italia documentary
Giomondi in his Champion of Italy jersey, Always seemed like a Classy rider. RIP sir.

Nobody get out of this life alive. A sad day indeed but reading the list of his palmarés above, what struck me is the time between wins. Example, Paris-Brussels, '66 and '76. That's career longevity summed up in a nutshell, amazing. Rest well FG.
