In search of the perfect alloy/carbon drop bar commuter
At a budget, of course.
I am looking for an Alloy frame carbon fork drop-bar bike with rack and fender capability with 700x38mm tires (that is 38mm tires with fenders, so room for some beefy 50mm fenders). I’d prefer a mellow/stable geometry. There is a ton of salt in the winter time here, and I think aluminum will serve me better than an ED treated steel frame.
Current commuter ride is a CrossRip elite, and 35mm+fenders is truly the limit with this bike (at least with any knobs at all on the tires). Through axles would be a plus, and I’ll probably build it 1x11 - I haven’t seen much quite like this as fully featured gravel rigs tend to either be steel or without brazeons for racks, and the handful of drop bar bikes sold as commuters are either built for 32mm tires or fully fledged steel touring bikes.
It looks like a Salsa Journeyman would probably do the trick, but it doesn’t appear to be available as a frameset right now (and I don’t have a dealer nearby). What else might work?

You mention salt. I tried the KMC ept (ecoproteq) chain this winter. Not a single spot of rust. Sprayed the bike down 1-2 times a week with a handpump sprayer. For me, this is a valuable add-on to a valuable winter bike. [/offtopic]

As I was reading your post I was thinking "Journeyman" and then got to that last paragraph. D'oh!
I dunno. Diverge? Alloy Clubman? Go steel with a Soma Fog Cutter?

The diverge looks it could work - as could the Haanjo (but ugh those red graphics). They don't list the alloy frame for sale as a frameset for the diverge, though.
Also - is it a normal specced steerer tube or the same weird size that's on the Sequoia? Specialized is pretty vague (much like they are with the Sequoia).
