wary of buying online. anyone know of any national chains that might carry these so I can try them on before buying them. I have no clue - never went shopping for these. if you are in the Boston Metrowest area, even better!

My recumbents have mesh seats. My only concern when riding recumbents is stuff falling out of my pockets. I look for zipper pockets or cargo shorts with some kind of retention flap over the pockets.

The last bunch I bought were the cheapest model from Pricepoint. The pads were terrible - they were so stiff they bruised my inner thigh - but that was okay since I ripped the pads out of them anyway. The lycra in them is nice, and fairly heavy-weight. I use coolmax underwear with them.

I have jammers. They're awfully low-cut for use on a bike. And they have a seam in the wrong place for recumbent riding. You can use lycra running shorts; but they're not really cut for riding.

I have used Performance Bike Mountain Bike shorts with the removable liner for years and they work great if you like the baggy style recumbent shorts. They have retail stores too. If you like the lycra type shorts, get some skulling (rowing) shorts. They work great too and are much more reasonably priced.

I guess I have been doing it wrong. I just try to wear shorts heavy enough that they don't blow up and show off the hole in my underwear.

I find that most retail chains carry swim trunks/shorts. They certainly work for me.

I had a pair of regular cycling shorts that I never wore because the padding always made it look like I was carrying a load in the back. I spent an hour or so picking the padding out and now, with a pair of cotton briefs underneath to absorb sweat, have a nice comfortable pair of shorts for riding my bent.

Remember one of the great things about bents is the fact you dont have to buy high priced shorts to protect you from your bike. BTW I just put keys, money, etc in my trunk pack so I dont lose them.

Sort of. If you're wearing shorts that have a pad, the pad servers as the underwear. If you're wearing plain lycra, one layer isn't enough. Jammers, for instance, have a second panel in front. (Jammers are lycra racing swim suits that are above-the-knee length.) If you wear unpadded lycra shorts, use wicking fabrics and not cotton underneath.

You have a lot of choices of what to wear when riding bents. You can use standard padded lycra, lined mountain bike/touring shorts, unlined lycra, or street shorts of some sort. Modesty dictates some limits obviously. And make sure the leg openings don't blow open in the wind and become bee scoops.

I meant loose fitting but not baggy with close fitting leg openings like these. I don't ride a recumbent I just like the looks of these. My current MTB shorts flap around a lot. I just want to try them on to see if I like them but it doesn't make sense to buy them just to try them on. Know what I mean?

Un padded compression shorts work fine. I have a bag behind me,, no need for pockets. On casual rides I wear regular shorts with snap or zippered pockets. I have never lost anything.
When Its real hot I wear running shorts,, light, thin, cool, and a liner to keep private things private..
I got a regular long leg Speedo, about a 8" Inseam, works great but the tan lines close to the knee's are ugly, Good for night rides.

Like anything sport-specific, cycling specific items are vastly overpriced. Go find a pair of shorts at Walmart or any other store that you like and just go for it.

When I first got my I didn't think about things falling out of pockets. I lost a set of car keys ($258 to replace) and a touch screen cell phone (nightmare ensued, see the blog: www.rlkiser.com/blog Ain't Modern Technology Wunnerful?). I adapted an expanding underseat bike pack with zipper compartments and carry everything in there.

I found a nice pair of SANTIC MTB Shorts with zipper pockets on ebay for $22. They come with pads or removable. Lots of other styles on there too. Why pay exorbitant retail prices for the same stuff? It's worth the wait for shipping.
