Yes, it's always a shame when a bicyclist is killed just because some drivers are careless. I really wish that more roads in Florida (and all over the US) were bicycle-friendly. It would be nice to have more bike lanes and/or bike trails to get from point A to point B. The Suncoast Trail is great, but I have to ride 4 miles to get to it.

Me too...not only do I wish the roads were more biker-friendly...I wish the government put money into building bicycle trails....maybe in the national parks.

Maybe its just me, but there are no trails in south Georgia.

I just read alot of blogs re this accident and saw many ignorant cager entries who believe we don't have a right to be on the road.

A year ago I had a carload of rednecks intentionally open their door on me as I was descending a steep hill at 25mph +. The door barely clipped my left leg - it would have hit me full on had for some reason I not moved over in time - God was looking out for me. There was a 30-40 foot ravine drop on my right side, which is where I could have gone. They were hanging out the windows and yelling the **** "f" word at me etc as they drove past.

I can deal with the "f" word, the taunts, but that was nothing short of deadly force. That experience left me so scared and bothered that in anger I sold my bike, stand, truing stand, everything. I am now gaining weight, lethargic, winded, and a prime candidate for a heart attack and looking to get back in the saddle and shopping for a good road bike. Whats ironic is I am using BP oil money to get it - I worked as a consultant for BP for this oil spill for 3 months this summer. Mr. Grooters was riding for Oil Spill charity.

I will ride again... but I broke my chops learning to ride in Philadelphia, which in my mind is bike city USA for the East Coast - I loved it there. Here in the South is another story.

My prayers go out for Mr. Grooters and his family.

I really don't feel safe in bike lanes. I"ve caught myself drifting into them while driving.
