Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds about right. And I'm not even a Shimano user. The problem is, Ultegra is less than half the price of Dura Ace. And the Dura Ace crank is atrociously ugly.

And then for minimal extra weight penalty over 6800 you can get 5800 for about $350-385 for full group and everything I've read has said they are all mechanically identical.

One of the reasons why I have full Dura Ace except for the crank.

Have you seen Campagnolo's newest crankset? It makes the Shimano crankset look handsome.

Campy's carbon cranksets have always been godawful, IMHO. But that carbon marbling look just makes me cringe, so others might have a different opinion.

The 9000 is nice for sure. Price for cassettes and chains: not so nice.

I like the carbon marbling, but the shape of their latest cranksets make the Shimano ones look good.

9000 chains are $41 at wiggle. I can live with that.

Where does this article say that 6800 (or even 105) is less durable than 9000? I've always hear/assumed that Ultegra is the most durable because it's less weight-weenie built.

I for one actually really like the look of the DA crank. At first I thought it was UGLY but it has grown on me and I wouldn't mind having one on my own bike.

I don't get using DA chains. I'd just use the 5800 chains for ~$20.

Sure, but $41 for a chain is no big deal. KMC X11SL chains cost even more.

They advised against using the DA cassette - get the Ultegra instead.

Rode DA9000 and didn't like the ergos.
1. Campy
2. Sram Red 22
3. Force 22
4. Utegra (same performance as DA only 1/2 price)
5. DA9000
