I was always jealous of people who could work at home. As a dealership mechanic there was just no way and I never did side work. I retired in April and it's still strange to say that

I'm thankful that I'm able to do it occasionally when I need to be home for a contractor or something, or home with the kids for some reason, but I hate it too much to do long term.

I don't have a nice, separate office set up, which would help, and I have young kids, which is tough. But I enjoy being at work and being able to walk down and talk to people and stay somewhat focused. I also feel even worse than usual when I have a few minutes of downtime and I'm screwing around on the internet.

We get 2 days a week; I wish it were 3. When they were doing construction on our office I would have to go to lunch to meet my coworker just to make sure we were both on the same page so its good to go in a few days, nothing beats face time for communication.

Plus instead of eating I can ride at lunch, and I'm out the door riding 5 minutes after I get off work.

Took the GRE this morning. Verbal was fine, I'm relatively unhappy with the math, but the scores are good enough for the programs I'm aiming at. 4 hours in a chair and it felt more intense than a bike race!

Yes, but you have to wait for the score to come back. Most the programs I've looked at eont care about written scores though.

I sit for my gre in mid July. Had hoped to take it in June, but work and life got busy so I haven't studied as much as I need to.

Yep, two essays with 30 minutes to write each one. I was able to get my quant and verbal scores immediately after finishing, the essays need to be scored by hand so that takes a couple of weeks.

Ha I remember doing that, got full score on the reasoning section and lowish score on the memory section. Luckily my engineering school cares more about reasoning than vocabulary I guess.
The "verbal" was like 90% vocabulary aka memory skills, and I have terrible memory (I just spent a full minute trying to think of the word "vocabulary").
And then the "math" part wasn't even math, it's just a logical reasoning test, and it supposedly got harder and harder with each right answer but it just ended before any questions even got hard.

Ha, I sort of felt the same way about the math as you did about the verbal! The math I hadn't used since high school is all stuff I sorta forgot about and had to relearn over the past couple of months. The stuff I use fairly regularly I breezed through (charts, compound interest, ratios, speed differentials, etc). I also kinda went into brainlock during the second quant section and had a mini meltdown after spending wayyyyyy too much time on a problem and realizing I had like 10 minutes to answer the final 15 questions, which is why I'd like to retake it and pump up the quant score.

Its been several years since I took it, but I don't think there was any difficult math? Like nothing harder than algebra 2 IIRC? But then again, I took it right out of college and still solve systems of equations on occasion. I also do remember taking several minutes on a few of them - it wasn't "hard" in the sense that I didn't have the ability, but some did take some hard planning/thinking. But then the next would be quick and cancel out the time penalty.

Not sure where to post this. Shoot - this is a crazy talented field, I don't know what caused the change. Multiple riders without a UCI license are "pros" inc last year's 2nd place.

Why am I incapable of just riding my bike, just a little, for fun?

My wife convinced me to take an hour one weekend morning and start going for a ride and she'd watch the kids (normally I get up early with the kids both weekend days so she can sleep in after her long week of dealing with the kids).

I'm immediately looking at pedal based power meters, new computers, considering how to sneak in 5, 6 hours a week, start training, dreaming about getting back on the track, perhaps even a crit.

I haven't ridden in 2.5 years. I'm now riding at least some. This would seem to be an improvement. But I'm immediately in deep again (and I can tell I'm starting to make my wife regret suggesting I ride, which is definitely not what I want to do, so I'm trying to keep it low key and cheap).

I think my best option is commuting, which I might try later this week. My drive is 20 minutes, but I could ride it in 30. It's mostly downhill to work and mostly uphill back.

So on a day I wanted to train I could ride in, 30 minutes, ride home a long way and do an hour, get 90 minutes in, and it only costs me about 45 or 50 minutes over the drive.

The point for me is that I want it to be fun, and I don't (or shouldn't) care about doing well in races or being fast. If I'm fast enough to enjoy riding and be healthy overall, that should be my goal right now. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old, I'm just not really willing to make the big sacrifices that would be necessary to be actually fast (which I never will be, because I'm fat and have bad genetics).

My point is that this sport is stupid, addicting, time consuming, and I hate that I love it.

That is the ideal commute. Downhill means you can get to work with relatively little or no sweat. On the way home you know you have a shower waiting for you. And do you even need to take the "long way"? Riding your nuts off, uphill, for 30 minutes every day should be sufficient.

In the end, though, some of us just need a competitive outlet. If you don't want it to involve the bike, try some other sport or activity.
