Best way to a 1 : 1.1 ratio from current 10sp sram setup

Hi Everyone,

I ride a 2012 BMC GF01, and I currently have a Sram Force 10-speed groupset, with 53/39 chainrings and an 11-28 ultegra cassette. That puts the lowest gearing at 1 : 1.39.

I'd like to give myself a little bit of extra gearing for everyday hill grinding (Say ~1 : 1.25). And I'd also like to have the ability to set up for a major hilly gran fondo (~1 : 1.1), while ideally not dropping the component quality too much.

I've read that the 39t inner ring can be replaced with a 38t (BCD 130), without causing any shifting issues, even though its not recommended by Sram. So I've ordered one, it was cheap. I've also read that the short RD can probably take a 30t cassette, although Sram says max is 28t, and wow 30 looks like it'd be tight.

I can get a WiFli rear derailleur which Sram puts up to 32t (38 with 32 = 1 : 1.19). I could find some discussion asking about a 34t cassette with the WiFli RD, but not any confirmation on whether that works. (also this RD has 37t clearance)

It looks like i can also get 10sp Sram Force compact cranks with 50/34 (34 with 28 = 1 : 1.21).

I don't really want to give up the 53 big ring permanently. Do I need both the WiFLi RD for everyday, and then the compact cranks for the gran fondo? (34 front and 32 rear is 1 : 1.06)

What do you recommend?
Thanks for your help

A triple crank is one way to get lower gearing. Not trendy but effective.

Any SRAM 2 x 10 MTB rear derailleur(x5,x7,x9,GX) will work with your Force 10 speed shifters. That will allow you to run at least an 11/36 cassette.

Nice, thanks for your input guys. I'll find a good quality 10 speed SRAM MTB rear derailleur, and probably leave it on the bike permanently.

Speaking of which, I'm reading a lot of bad things about Sram 10 speed MTB rear derailleurs.
Jammed or clicking clutches (X9), flimsy cages (X0). Also next to no availability except for the GX, which feels like a step down in spec from Sram Force.

I get the impression that the X9 rear derailleur with a serviced clutch is held in highest regard out of the high-spec Sram 10-speed RDs. Which is probably why they're all gone everywhere online.

Does that sound right to you? Any advice? I'm almost leaning towards getting the force wifli, and testing it with a 34t.

I also read about the wolf tooth roadlink extension piece for lowering the RD, to allow a larger cassette
