The reach will be about right for me, but is there a different range of sizes for the stem to fit older steerer tubes? In general, no, just stay away from French stuff that may not fit. Almost everything out there for road bikes, in quill, is 22.2 diameter to fit inside 1" threaded steerers.

Also as Im going for a mix of ultegra with STI. I was intending on buying a new Chain, Cassette and I have a new Ultegra SL Chainset and going to get an ultegra rear mech all in grey does anyone have any good tips on setup, or sites with good instructions for ensuring I get correct chain length etc.

Getting correct chain length is the same from 5-sp to 10-sp, and there are YouTube and other videos to show you, or just search "getting the right chain length" and you should find some info. I'd recommend www.sheldonbrown.com and put it in your favorites.

The mix of parts is broad when upgrading, so in order for us to be specific on advice, you'd have to be specific on parts.

Thanks for the advice!
Welcome, also.

Xenon 9-sp is really just a different level, that I know of, like Avanti. As far as compatibility with Shimano, I haven't a clue. That's been discussed at length, and the answers are on this forum somewhere.

Good luck, have fun.

That is a great looking conversion, what components are you using? Gotta love the toclips and straps with the modern drive train. So far I'm just the opposite; clipless pedals are the only modern gear on my rides, but I'll come around soon.

best terry i've seen as well. looks like you have the cables cross-routed under the downtube-- are you getting friction at the BB cable guide? i tried the cross routing, but i think the reduction in housing friction up top was counteracted by the angle the cables were entering the (campy) BB guide. curious to hear your experiences, as i am running new 10sp veloce as well.

Thank you everyone!

dyande
I'm a huge fan of the clips and strap look too, and thirdgenbird is right, the parts are veloce except the crankset is centaur and the wheels are campy scirocco. One thing that bothers me though is the plastic paddles of the new veloce though, I guess, I can live with it . It might be blasphemy, but I'm midway though wiping off all the logos, with the exception of the shifter blades because those seem to be underneath the anodized layer.

And good eye tamaso206 ! The cables are crossed. I was concerned about this too, actually, I haven't been able to really experiment because pretty much as soon as I finished building this, snow fell on the ground and well, I'm a wuss with snow and salt. . Though in the few short test rides I took, they felt pretty good I think. One observation I made though is I think a major source of friction for me is the the braze on bottom bracket cable guide (though I'm not sure what the consensus is on grinding it off and replacing it with a modern plastic one). It was a bit grimy inside, but I tried my best to clean it out.

i am not a huge fan of the plastic paddles either, coming from the lovely skeletonized alloy paddles on 9sp athena... i'm not sure they affect actual shifting performance though, ah well. what are you using to remove logos? i've thought of doing the same.

personally i wouldn't want to try and remove braze-on bb cable guides, a number of high-end custom builders still use them so i don't think they are a huge issue, performance-wise. if you are worried about friction, you can cut open a shift housing and run a short section of teflon lining under the bb-- i did this on my old ironman frame and it worked great. hope you can get out on the bike soon!

ive never had an issue crossing cables when using a plastic cable guide. I did just route a bike with a brazed on cable guide and canted it right away due to fear of extra friction. It just didn't feel right.

Ive actually debated doing this as well. Please share your method and close up pictures. I don't see it as blasphemy. Older campy wasn't labeled and I would be doing it in an attempt to make parts look more period correct. I would likely do it to my derailleurs and brakes.

The logos come off very easily. I can't speak for other groups, but first, by feel make sure that the logos are ontop of the surface of the part (otherwise it is impossible unless you feel like taking off a few layers of whatever the parts are coated in!) I used nail polish remover, cloth, and a credit card. I found it easiest to cover the logo with the cloth drenched with the nail polish remover and let it sit for a minute or so, then scraping the logo off with a credit card (finger nails also works). It should come off effortlessly. Ill post some pictures when I get home tonight.

+1!

de-logo'd my alloy veloce derailleurs, sugino crank arms, and tektro R539s yesterday after my sunday morning roll yesterday. polished alloy looks really clean-- maybe even classier w/ some more 'tasteful' campy branding on that chunky rear derailleur in decal form...

may have to look into that...

HAHA!

Scored these this morning!
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Campagnolo-V...p2047675.l2557

Also purchased Shiftmate #4 to be able to use it with my Ultegra/600 8 speed setup
Ergos coming from France and Shiftmate from US so they'll be here next week, it's been awhile since I ordered something that's not from China and takes a month to arrive hehe...

Can't wait to hook this thing up!
Any good source for down tube cable stops, sloped? I checked ebay and there are some but the shipping costs are overkill, I mean it's a small item/package, have ordered similar sized stuff and it was never more than 9$ to Croatia, but for down tube stops, shipping prices are plain stupid 20$ or 30$!

I've had this built up SS, DuraAce 7400 brifters, Sora brifters, Barcons and now, Ergo.

My late 70's Woodrup now wears 9-speed Campy Athena with 46/34 rings on an Olympus crankset. I rode it for about 10 miles today, and it promises to be a great long distance bike In proper British guise, a set of Blumel Populars and a Brooks B17 Competition Standard top it off.

That's such a great build. I really like the way you have the bars tilted up a little like they did back in the day. Looks like an old Rebour drawing - that's the way those bars were designed to be used! Super comfy I'll bet. Nice job.
