What to buy for a fellow commuter who lost his bike in an accident?
Well, the subject says it all. He needed medical treatment, but he seems to be much more depressed about wrecking his precious (and expensive) Bianchi. Any ideas on how to make him feel better?

Is the guy on sound economic footing and capable of replacing the bike? Is he down on his heels and the Bianchi was a price possession which he can't replace? Are you talking about hooking him up w/ another bike or a trinket/curio "hope this helps a little bit" sort of gift?

I doubt he can afford another bike like the one he lost, although he's perfectly capable of purchasing some bike. As for me, I can't afford buying him a bike. I'm looking for something small to make him feel better. A gift card sounds good. Would love to hear more ideas. Thanks!

If there is, here's a thought - see what's involved in building a bike @ the coop. Then take him out to dinner and present him w/ the fruits of your research.
I, too, really like the LBS gift card idea.

Meanwhile, I hope your friend was not seriously injured or impaired by his accident. A healthy rebound from a crash is a priceless gift.

Get him a sweet new helmet. You'll be showing him you care about his safety and it will be one less thing he'll have to replace/rebuy after he recovers.
