Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Changing my Cannondale Synapse 2017 Carbon Ultegra Disc Wheelset

Hi guys, I need some advice to narrow down my choices. One of the more glaring weakness I've seen on some reviews is my bike's wheelset that it comes with.

Here in Singapore it's always warm to hot, and I ride around 80 to 100km per week, so not a ton, but may do more in the future.

Wheelset: Mavic Aksium Disc WTS
Tyres: Mavic Yksion WTS, 700x25c, folding

https://www.evanscycles.com/cannonda...-bike-EV280318

This is my first road bike and I'm thinking of upgrading the wheelset since I ride a lot more now and had it for nearly 30 months.

Can anyone offer some advice on models/brands to look out for? Thanks in advance!

Forgetting the reviews for a minute, what is wrong with your current wheels? What weakness do you see in them?

While I am sure there are many nicer wheels, the ones you have are perfectly adequate for the average rider that isn't racing.

Your wheels are 1905 grams so they are not dogs. They aren't lightweight either. If you want to go carbon then look at Hunt or Light Bicycle. You can drop around 3-400 grams per wheelset. Personally I would stay away from the non-branded carbon but others swear by them. Hunt also make some very nice aluminum wheelsets that you could look at. You don't state a budget so it is hard to recommend.

ENVE or Zipp with some good hubs.

/thread.

idk man you want carbon or alloy ?

Zipp 303s service course (I think they’re called ) are a good choice.

anything else you’re looking at dropping 1500-3500 on just wheels.

see if you can get some demo wheels from a shop to try. Are you racing!? What are you doing in the wheels ?

How deep into the Zipp or ENVE line-up can you go before running into major issues with crosswinds?

Noone cares but my preference aesthetically are the Zipp 404 NSW ($4000 MSRP @~1460g; Front 53mm, Rear 58mm) and the ENVE SES 5.6 ($2550 MSRP @~1550g; Front 54mm, Rear 63mm). Extra $2.5K for -100g?

I think crosswinds are over rated . Makes the bike a little harder to handle, but you get used to it. Aero wins on the flats. You also get a stiffer wheel if its deeper, good for the climbs. I like the look of deep wheels, and you get an aero benefit over 20mph, but for a guy running a synpase, I doubt he needs some $4k Zipps

I always recommend my boy steve for reviews: https://intheknowcycling.com/category/gear-reviews/

Check out fulcrum

I have a 2018 Cannondale Synapse Carbon 105 Disc and the hubs on the stock wheels crapped out. Ended up replacing them with Fulcrum Racing 7 DB:

been very pleased with them so far.
