Atala Record 101 Professional - 1969 Vintage...

How I regretted selling my Atala, years ago. Fortunately, a great opportunity surfaced, on Ebay, recently, and I pulled the trigger. Been a long time since I bought a frame or bicycle off of Ebay. And the frame/fork set bought? A 1969 Atala Record 101 Professional...

Does anyone know what the significance of the model means. Atala Professional, no problem. But what does the Record 101 signify?

Thanks and I am very excited to replace my Atala. Gotta wait for the box to reach Duluth, then to me with friends, and, finally, the Loon Lake Cottage...

Randy

Not only did you replace your Atala...you did so with a gorgeous frame! That might be one of the best looking Atala's I have seen...

That's a great looking frameset. I remember it looking fantastic built up in another thread. What are the build plans?

As always, "period and price point correct". I try for original, but $ helps to determine what actually gets fitted. At the moment, I have a gorgeous set of wheels, a head set, Universal with NOS hoods or Campy brake set with NOS Campy Globe hoods, Campy brake top tube clamps, NR crank set, NR pedals, Brooks Pro saddle, TTT Record(need Grand Prix) stem, Cinelli old logo bars(need TTT), but I am short a few things(Record bottom bracket, 26.8 Campy two bolt NR seat post - got a complete Campy first gen - 1977 - rear der and matching front der and clamp on shifters to offer in trade for what I need).

Once built up, I will be following my new bicycle riding program, which is...

Walk/Carry my vintage road bicycles, the older ones fitted with sew-ups, to the highway. Then smooth sailing until the walk/bike carry over the gravel road part to get home again. Who knows, if I ever develop a liking for swimming in the lake, I just might become triathalonjawa:-(

NOT!

Congratulations Randy on finding one of your graal mounts!

Most handsome.

Somewhat similar in appearance to Oldairhead's 1968 Lygie:

Looking forward to reading about the build; do you have the bits you would like to use?

I was surprised when no one else stepped up to the plate. In my mind, the Atala Professional is one very collectible road bicycle. The last few minutes saw me waiting for the Snipe Monster to rear its ugly and briefly seen head.

Total guess here. But there was a very popular late season race, the Baracchi Trophy, that was around 100-110 kilometers. It was a two man time trial. The winners of the Baracchi Trophy are like a whose who of cycling greats. The '62 edition featured Rudi Altig paired with Jacques Anquetil. Altig literally pushed Anquetil at 30mph for a good portion of the race. It's on Youtube, great stuff.

Anyway, there could have been an Atala rider in there, Gimondi? perhaps. Set a 101k record? That's my guess and I'm sticking with it.

Somehow, I keep on thinking there is an Atala in my future.

I'm not sure why, but they speak to me as a classic Italian brand. They are like the Schwinn of Italy, making everything from low end to high range bikes and everything in-between. They are the "everymans" bike, the working class ride.

Looks like you got a winner. Love the unique decals on the DT.

Sounds like you have all the right bits for her. Lets see some pics when your done!

I don't think there is any special significance to the numbers - here's a picture of the Atala line up ad from 1974 and you can see the model names range all over. I suspect "Record" was to signify they used Campy Record (Nuovo Record in this case), and the 101 probably meant top of the line....

I was watching that one too just out of curiosity (I have a '67 Record). You got a great deal on it. One thing to keep in mind, the rear wheel clearance is huge. On mine a Campy brake with a drop bolt will barely reach a 700C rim, although a Universal 61 or 68 has no problem.

You scored a nice one Randy. I bought a '72 new. Still have it, rode it yesterday. I always liked the chromed fastback. Mine came with the really nice 3TTT triangular-extension stem. Have fun with it!

Hi, I'm an Italian reader. Although this discussion is old, I hope someone answers. I purchased an Atala Professional frame like Randyjawa's but a restoration is needed and I intend to change color. The current color is a very ruined gold / yellow. I really like this frame and I intend to restore it in the same way. I therefore ask if it is possible to show me the ral-color of blue of this splendid bike.

P.s. I can't post photos yet because I'm newbie

who already have this bike can help me.

Thanks for your help. I've been working on the restoration project for a long time and I'm lucky to have found almost all the original parts of the bike. Now the biggest problem is the decision to do the color again. I need the exact shade of blue and only those who already have this bike can help me.

I sold the Atala a couple of years ago and sorry but I have no idea about the color code. This is what the bicycle looked like when it went to its new home...

I'm sorry you sold your Atala. I learned to appreciate mine thanks to your site (but is it no longer online?). Don't you remember if the blue had an anodized effect or was it a normal blue or a metallized blue? I would also like a general indication using the blue ral chart.

Can you look on this website? Click on the colors to enlarge: www.coloriral.it/ral-classic/gradazioni-di-blu

What do you think of the blue that I marked in my photo album? It looks very similar
You can find it with the name of Nanni blue metallic.

I took a look at those color swatches and can be of little help with my challenged vision these days. The best I can do is show this frame set that I am in the middle (really poor word choice) of painting. To me, the color on this old German frame comes pretty close in the sun. Getting this color was easy and reasonably inexpensive ($16.00 a can compared to $40.00 a can for custom mixed). The department store had a wide variety of blues in closely varying shades. Anyway, because I too liked the color of my long gone Atala, I picked this hoping it was a good match...

But not close enough. I suppose if I were seeking a better match, I would just take the frame set to the paint shop and ask them to computer match the color. But that is a pricey way to go for me. So, I go to the department shore, pick a color, like the one above.

Sorry that I cannot be more help than that.

That is a beautiful colour on the Atala. Let us know if you do find a match. I suggest you take the photo to an auto paint shop where they paint cars. Those guys have well trained eyes I imagine.

I don’t think your swatch is a complete match. Maybe needs to be very slightly more green. But I’m no expert. Even a store that mixes and matches house paint can help with a RAL match if you have a RAL book.

You gave me a great idea. I thought of going to a coachbuilder but not one with a tinting machine! At this point I want to make two attempts. First: ask to make a 400ml spray with the original yellow color and try an integrative restoration by saving the original paint. Second: if it is not possible (golden yellow is very beautiful but strange to restore, perhaps caused by the pearly effect) then I will try with the shade of blue that you have recommended. In this case perhaps it is a "blue lagoon color". Finally I wanted to ask you another thing. In a forum discussion (Show me your 1960 - 1969 bicycles, page 2) I saw another 1967 Atala Professional in an even different color. is it a different color or just a photo effect?

On google images it comes out as Atala record 1967
