Work on Silver Comet Trail extension is underway
The work on the extension of the Silver Comet Trail eastward toward the City of Atlanta is seriously underway at this point, and the new section of trail that will extend the SCT from the current start on Mavell Road (near the Publix on South Cobb Drive) to Plant Atkinson Road. That puts the endpoint very close to the Atlanta city limit at the Chattahoochee River.
This section of trail is projected to open in the summer of next year, and the long-term goal is to connect the SCT with the Beltline trails.

The best I can tell, staring at maps today, the Path Foundation will (of course) connect from the West Side Reservoir Park in NW Atlanta, across the old Norfolk switching yard, to the Whetstone Creek Trail. Just off the Marietta Rd Trail Head parking area is the rail line with a spectacular bridge across the Chattahoochee River! That rail stops (or is part of the unimproved Silver Comet Line) at the East-West Connector. Frippin SWEET!!!

A little work on connecting Georgia Tech University to the West Side Reservoir Park and the trail is very doable from Stone Mountain to Anniston, AL.
