What makes a good take-along tool kit? This is mine. I'd like to know what others bring as I've not found a thread on this topic. What might I be missing?

I just carry enough stuff with me to fix one puncture. If I'm going to be eating lunch someplace, I usually take a cable lock with me.

I used co carry a lot more stuff. Whenever I've broken something, like a seat post binder bolt however, I never seemed to have the appropriate spare. That happened rarely enough that I decided it was pointless to carry any spare parts with me. The other issue is that I usually forget exactly what I have in my bag anyway. I remember one spring opening the trunk bag on my tandem and finding a banana that had been left the preceding fall. The banana skin looked like leather but it wasn't too messy and it didn't smell gross.

lol no I'm not. I am sure the right size is in my tool kit though.
As for the tools, I usually tour and this kit reflects that.
wrench is for all the lock nuts and bolts on my front and rear Tubus racks.
silicone tape imo is better then electrical tape and has many uses. I use it for tapeing handlebar wrap ends. A few wraps of it are on my racks where each one of the ortlieb hooks clip to it . It cushions them and keeps them from sliding I'm useing it to hold my Garmin cadence sensor to my crank. I broke one of the rubber bands it came with.
zip ties. I usually find a use for zip ties....anything from holding down gear to improvising a zipper pull on my tent
leather dressing is for my brooks b17.
derailer sprocket is in there from the time I lost one and the lbs only had them in a 2 pack so after the roadside repair I stuck it in there. I know there marked top and bottom.
oil is for weekly chain maintanance
bic lighter is cause somewhere sometime A. my jetboil ignition will quit working B. I'll want a camp fire C. I'll have some cord ,thread or strap that is comeing unraveled.

I've put a lot of thought, maybe to much thought into my carry as well. Mine is almost the same. Never considered a brake block. Why that? Either do not hit the brakes with the wheel off or use a tire lever to push the piston back out if you do. I carry some duct tape and electrical tape but either wrapped around my pump or around an old credit card (that could function as a brake block I guess as well). Zip ties and cash inside my handlebars behind my end cap.

On extremes like off road touring, canal/rail trial or >60 miles and away from roads I'll add more, like a rear hanger, secure some spare spokes in my seat tube, some turns of steel wire, extra doo hikey thing that holds the cable on the screw of derailleurs and brakes etc, an extra set of brake pads, bug spray.

Last year I saw a dude pushing his bike on the C&O and about 5-7 miles more to go to get to the PawPaw exit. There isn't even anything around in PawPaw to fix it but at least you'd be off the C&O. Busted rear hanger and a failed attempt at trying to bypass it. I hope to avoid being that guy... I always carry a spare link and the only time I needed it was on the C&O myself, never needed my spare hanger yet.

This is just an update. I'll be the first to admit I go thousands of miles without needing anything in here I'll include pictures and weights. Another use for zip ties is wheel trueing. Zip one around the fork twist or cut at the right length. I know this kit is heavy but If weight was a big concern I would focus on loseing 30 pounds before I worried about my bike. I only get 2 weeks off a year I spend them on my bike on the remotest roads in the N.E. I can find. I enjoy repairing something myself much more then finding a bike shop, a ride to the bike shop, and then waiting for it to be done. With that being said when I'm not on a touring vaca I love my local bike shops especially the one here in Greencastle PA. They are awesome and not pushy and always willing to share there extensive knowledge.

Gatorade bottle was .99 cents at a Lbs a couple winters ago.

Pump, tube, Price Point (remember them?) mini-tool, one pound REI camp chair, two small bottles of wine (my wife is usually along) and snacks. Extra tools, including chainbreaker, multiple tubes and adjustable wrench for long rides in uninhabited areas.

I have a bunch of free samples of gun oil in a very small and robust disposable tubes. Not what I would normally use for lube but takes up almost no space and perfect for an on the road emergency.

Most of my bikes pretty much have those on there "permanently". I never thought to cut them off. Just spin it out of the way until I need it.
