Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Upgrade advice please?

Hi,

I currently ride an alu Merida Scultura 400. All stock. I have about 3k++ for the upgrade. What would you suggest?

1. Upgrade to Reacto aero frame
2. Specialized Tarmac Comp/Expert
3. Giant TCR Advanced Pro 1
4. Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 8.0
5. Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8.0
6. Cannondale Caad12
7. Any other suggestions

Thanks in advance

Why do you ride? What kind of riding do you like best? How often do you ride and how far? How often and how far would you like to ride?

Find a local frame builder, talk to them and get a frame built just for you.

105 is a serviceable group, so you could just move it over.

105 is very good so yeah you could just buy a frame

If i were you i would try to sell your bike and get another one (second hand to me is always better) , because to me having a frame with nothing on it is just a waste of money.

you could upgrade your wheels too

Go ride some of the bikes on your list.

The answer will become clear.

With that kind of dough, I would definitely consider doing a custom build as opposed to something off the rack.

I ride for fitness and as a hobby mainly. I ride about 3 times per week outdoors and try to fit a couple of indoor trainer sessions in the week.

I like climbing the best as I'm small and light. The area I live in is mainly flats and I ride about 70km per ride. Sometimes 100km. I also join overseas riding events and hope to be competitive in future.

Thanks for other inputs!

As for custom builders, do you guys have any recommendation?
I do have access to Independent Fabrication.

If you don't climb much but like to ...an aero bike ought to be a good idea. An all-around speed bike---like most of what you listed--are all good. There isn't a bad bike in the list.

The CAAD 12 would be better if you sprint or ride crits, because its fame will be tougher and will survive the inevitable crashes.

more than that ... pretty much whichever one you can get with good parts at a good price in a color you like. They are all awesome bikes.

Whatever color scheme you like the most.

I'd keep both bikes. It's nice having a break up bike.
