Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Top 5 Clincher Tires

If I wanted a really good clincher tire for road riding but not racing what would you recommend? Low rolling resistance, good handling and reliable would be nice...

Conti grand prix 4000s, pretty much the "CAAD 9" of clinchers.

Michelin PR3's are also excellent but may wear quickly.

I love the ride of Michelin Pro 3 and Vittoria Open Corsa EX tires, but found that I flatted on them a lot. Now use Vredestein TriComp Fortezza, which I like almost as much and rarely get flats...

Michelin Krylion Carbon is better suited for just riding compared to P3R, especially if you're over 60kg.

I'm a fan of the Michelin PR3's, but at 6'6" & 205 lbs I only get about 1500 miles out of a set....I'm rolling GP4000s Conti's now and they seem great.

Probably because they only satisfy the "reliable" portion of the criterion.

Holly crap ... 12 replies in just over an hour, that's gotta be a record.

And thanks for the feedback. I've been hammering out the details for a new rear wheel with PowerTap SL+ and this was the last piece. I think I'll go with the GP4000s.

Second that. Hutchinson's have always treated me right. Michelin's would cut and puncture ALL the time...for me at least.

I've had heaps of pairs of old Contis, and they've been great except the old GPs had very vulnerable sidewalls; it was easy to ruin a tyre by scuffing the side on bricks or something. Supersports didn't have that issue.

Continental make a damn fine tyre.

GP 4000S

Vredestein TriComp Fortezza

Got to agree with this as the list but for non racing I'd rule out the PR3 and the Vittoria on reliability. The TriComp and GP 4000S are the way to go.

GP4000 are the best all around tire I have found. The fastest for me was Vredestien Tri Comps... But they wore down pretty fast.

For what you've described?

Michelin Lithions
https://www.michelinbicycletire.com/m...t=lithion.view

Or you can go spend $80 on tires that are higher performance and will only last half the summer. At least you'll look cool on your club ride though.
