First time
Going on my first touring monday the 13,starting in queens,ny to shawangunk wallkill trail crossing in poughkeepsi or hudson(i want to go to the rip van winkle bridge) and come back on bicycle route 9.
i will be camping in some parks and staying with some relatives,i dint want to have a loaded bike so i got a 20" kids trailer and modified,have all my camping gear,first aid,maps,gps,toilet paper,2500 calories dehydrated food,bike repair,safety gear,extra clothes,and fishing rod(with permit)and i think i am ready to roll.

So i finish my first bike camping and it was great,i wasn't able to do the whole route that i planned,but i did queens ny to beaverpond campground in harriman park,a good 140m with some unexpected detours,took my 14 year old crappy bike,aosom 2 trailer 100 pounds of useless crap(2 1/2 weeks of food) why i dont know,had 5 flats on the trailer wheels used all the patches,spare tube and selfpatching canister,last one was so bad i couldn't fix it,had to push it for 5 miles until i found a bike shop.I have to thank the ny state troopers they stopped to see if i need it help the first 4 times and a lot of bikers and people to.
It was a great experience planning to do it again next year,i will start training this time.

Awesome, congrats on your first tour, food is readily available if you are touring on-road, I usually bring enough to get me to the next place I know I'll be able to get more, plus one emergency dinner.

Glad you had fun and are planning to go again.
Literally hundreds of pounds? Or was that just hyperbole?
I try not to carry more than a couple pounds of food unless in really remote places and then I still carry just enough food for the time away from services plus a small safety margin. Usually on a road tour you can buy food daily. I find that a light load makes the riding much more pleasant. How light is best will vary with rider preference anywhere with the majority probably between 20 and 60 pounds of bags and gear. A few of us like to go really light (lowest I have gone so far was 10 pounds base weight) and some go to a heavier everything except the kitchen sink approach (60-80 pounds maybe). More than that strikes me as a pretty bad idea that would suck the fun out of the tour, but YMMV.

batrike, Thanks for the photos! Let's look at the bright side:
- A 14 year old 'crappy' bike can do the deed.
- Gear and food packaging lesson learned.
- You fished!
- There are times when anyone (I have) will flat just going around the block.
- Some people do give a d*mn. (Maybe this should be first?)
- A wonderful story to tell.
