Question Suggestions for a complete cargo ebike?

I'm looking to replace my car with this bike, I'll need it to be able to carry myself and another person (adult), hold some cargo, and have an electric motor.

My budget is around $2000-$2500.

Every once in a while, I have a 60 mile roundtrip commute, so I need the electric to last me for quite a bit. I can recharge at the destination. In most cases, I'll still be using my roadie turned commuter, but I need something for the longer distances or when I'm just feeling lazy.

The conditions I would be riding on will be 100% road and paved bike trails, and I live in Southern California where we have little to no rain, but would still like to be able to use it in rainy conditions.

Are there any good options for complete cargo bikes, or should I buy a cargo bike and just convert it myself?

Thanks!

I'm going to suggest this Klakhoff https://store.kalkhoffusa.com/Pro-Connect-p/ka09proc.htm
And adding an Xtracycle Free Radical Classic kit to the back. https://www.xtracycle.com/cargo-bicyc...assic-kit.html
The combo will put you over budget by about $50, plus shipping. Check on buying them through your LBS and you may be able to get the shipping for free, not positive about that but it is worth looking into.

The Klakhoff uses a mid drive motor; it and the battery pack are mounted low on the frame keeping the CG low. This is better for dealing with cargo. No bike is very good at carrying a passenger unless it is a tandem. The Xtracycle cycle is passable with a passenger because the passenger deck is lower than the captain's saddle, again keeping the CG low. Your speed with a passenger is going to be 8 or so mph and you are going to be paying full attention to steering the bike.

One great advantage to having a mid drive is the motor will be able to take advantage of the bike's gearing because the power is delivered through the chain. This will give you much more usable torque than a much higher wattage hub motor.

The Xtracycle is a fantastic cargo platform. Search, Xtracycle, and, long tail, in the Utility forum for lots of threads about their versatility.
You could convert a tandem, but I think that is a greater compromise as a computer than the Xtracycle will be as a passenger carrier.

The level of components on the Klakhoff is very high. Converting a bike with a hub motor, you will be hard pressed to keep the same level of componentry and stay in your budget.

hi there,

Im gonna suggest the surly big dummy, and also a papamotor 1000 w 48 volt kit..

the big dummy is made of high quality chromo steel and is built like a bull.

the papamotor kit has lots of power all for $1000 with a high quality battery.

You could do the same thing with a Yuba and I think it is a little cheaper then the Big Dummy and is also a quality chromo steel frame. I do know the Yuba is rated for a higher cargo load then the Big Dummy.

Trek Transport Plus.. the Plus is a rear wheel motor.
battery is over the wheel.

way over budget Adding a Stoke Monkey kit to a long-tail .. a big dummy or Xtracycle
add on required since the motor, outside a wheel
goes In the rear triangle, area.
It drives a Left side Chainring of a crossover drive tandem crank.
then the rest of the gears on the Right side final drive is available .

This is where the advantage is
the triple crank and Rear wheel cassette or IGH,
drive the wheel in a Wide variety of ratios..
