Rei

I guess everyone in the freaking world is trying to cash in their REI member coupons right now. Their website is crashed, their phones are crashed.

Grapevine has it that Tulsa will get the first REI in OK as soon as they get approval for their construction plan. They are wanting to build along the river and they have been told that they can't mess with the existing trail system, have to leave 10 of the sand volleyball courts, nor can they build where a playground/splash pad currently sits... and they have to ensure that there is plenty of parking for both their customers and park/trail users.

Between using my REI dividend, the REI credit card and the 20% off coupon, I bought a $ 200 Benchmade triage folding knife for $ 26 cash outlay. Woo hoo!

Tried to order at 1130 and no-go... so much for the extra 20%.

FYI
Our website has been experiencing technical difficulties this evening. Due to this, we are extending the ‪#‎REImember‬ coupon online until tomorrow 4/14 at 11:59 pm PT. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding, our apologies for the inconvenience!

I used my rebate and the 20% and a gift card I had and got a nice pair of running shoes for about $20 out of pocket.

REI extended the coupon through today, in response to yesterday's techno-crash. Just picked up a new tent for family camping and a ski helmet for my wife. Woohoo--new gear!

I still say the best deal around is the REI credit card with rebates to the REI dividend. There is no annual fee and I pay it off each month. So every year, I get about $ 100 added to my REI dividend just from using the card. Free money.

Although I've ordered random items through REI, I have not joined their cult, nor participate in their cultish behavior. Freakin' communistic hippies.

Bullying and shaming customers is not a good way to do business. I can't stand their commission-hungry salesmen who belittle me when I tell them no, I'm not a member, and no, I'm not paying money to become one. One guy actually shook his head and walked away in disgust when I told him I didn't spend enough money there to justify paying a fee so I can get a couple pennies back at the end of the year. I don't care what some retail worker thinks of me, but I don't want to support a store with such a culture of snobbery any more than I have to.

That said, I do shop there for bike stuff now and then, because they carry things that LBSs in my area don't. I bought a quality kickstand for my wife's bike that I didn't find in LBSs. I've also considered buying one of those long Topeak pumps that click in under the top tube, and they're the only folks in my area who stock them that I know of. I prefer not to order stuff online if I can walk into a store to see, touch, and/or try out something before buying it.

The time I bought the kickstand, I also grabbed a spare tube for my wife's new-at-the-time bike. I mention it was new because I bought the wrong size tube along with the kickstand. After undergoing a brutal interrogation by the cashier because I insisted in paying for the products I was buying only and not their $20 cover charge, I was quite unhappy when I returned the tube to get a different size and got grilled ruthlessly by the returns guy about not being a member. I had to explain to him I bought the tube there ONLY because I was there already buying a kickstand that I couldn't find anywhere else, and if I had wanted a tube only, I would have gone to Performance Bike right down the street and paid three dollars less for it!

I am now even cursing my REI purchase of an ENO DoubleNest hammock + bug net because QBP started carrying them and I could have got a much better deal as a bike shop employee...
