over the years running would just ping my brain again every once in a while, i sortof missed it. eventually the voice grew louder until i saw the grand canyon and that was that.

25k race will happen in december, for now i (impatiently) build base mileages

I used to be a member of the Georgia Ultra and Trail Running Society (GUTS - GUTS - Georgia Ultrarunning and Trailrunning Society - Home) and paid the $75 yearly to be a "Friend of Georgia State Parks." The trails at my local state park were open at night and I ran endlessly with the Petzl headlamp. Park rangers stopped me one night a few years ago, saw the headlamp and thought I was a poacher. Seems they were having a problem with locals hunting and shortly after they put up big signs "Trails close at dusk." I actually wrote a letter to the state parks commissioner asking them to reopen the trails and haven't renewed membership since.

I'd love to hear more about the race. Winter trail racing is great. Be careful or you will get marathon fever.

pacing is gonna be a huge problem for me, when i tell my brain "run now" it knows only one speed, and thats precisely at zone 4.7. gotta figure that **** out.

roughly 1500ft gain, theres a couple out&back spots which im not fond of, and tbh i wish it had more climbing, they could used some harder trail segments. that being said im excited to go run with people with a smile on my face, and hang out before/after. thats what makes me love racing

i already have the fever. i know at some point a 100 ultra will happen, i just have to get there.

It takes a long time to get to where you are not running like a light switch - two settings, on and off, resting heart rate or max heart rate. It takes a long time to train your body to run somewhere between max and min. I'm talking about one to two years. Patience and perseverance is key.

If you are not using one then a heart rate monitor will likely be of tremendous benefit. Doesn't have to be the most expensive. It just has to be capable of inputting your specific zones and setting an alarm when you get above a certain heart rate. I had a Polar for a while that did exactly that. I would set it to beep if heart rate fell below X or went above Y and then ran that zone even if it meant walking to keep the heart rate low. Legs want to run but zones have to rule when training the right way.

The heart rate monitor will teach you to trust the zones and teach you to back off when you start to run too hard. Will teach you to breathe better, get a longer stride for more efficiency. You will be like, "Oh, doing that makes my heart beat slower. I think I'll do that more!" and you will actually teach yourself to run better with a monitor.

Heart rate zone training for running can be really simple. "Precision Heart Rate Training" by Edmund Burke is a super simple book. It doesn't turn it into rocket science.

i have an hrm and am very familiar with my zones from the bike, i just have to learn how to control my heart on my feet like i do on a bike

ive been doing one run a week for ~3mi and doing some hiking once a week. yesterday i combined the run/walk on/off thing like i did when i first started running years ago. it got me farther without getting so wrecked, and was a lot more rewarding. shoulda did that from the start

(Saturday) I got up early and rode 62 miles of road, gravel, and horse trails with temps in the 60's and low 70's and had the wind push me home. A near perfect ride to say the least, and one that I'll be doing again.

On Sunday I followed that up with my wife and I taking my oldest boy on his first 20 mile ride while pulling my youngest in the trailer. Success.

Not today, but a couple of days ago. Long story short t-boned a car face first and wasn't my fault.
Weird how every damn part on the bike survived, yet the frame got creamed.
Even the fork survived, and the front wheel is true!
I will miss this damn bike so much as it was my first real build and have put over 7k miles since last year February.
Time to build up a new bike for next year. Im thinking a steel frame. Would love to find a bridgestone in my size.
Anyway, Be safe out there guys and please don't forget to wear your helmet because If I didnt I wouldve been a vegetable or dead.

I did 47 miles after having consumed only a bowl of yogurt and water today. My body was pretty cool with it up to about mile 30, then it was like "why did u do this."

Today I was commuting to work, and a mile and half in on the MUP, at 18mph....boom. Took a bee to the neck and it immediately stung me and almost took me right off the bike. Hurt like hell, welted up, and made my morning riding less than comfortable.
