The world doesn't have to conform to the lowest common denominator when it comes to understanding things.
Just because they think "cyclist" means a particular type of road cycling doesn't mean that they aren't cyclists. They are on bikes = Bicycles = Bicyclists = cyclists. If they were on three wheels they'd be "tricyclists" = cyclists.
You don't even have to look further than this very site: All types of cycles (uni-, bi-, tri-) here and all types of cyclists, including mountain bikers, road bikers, trike people, At least one cargo tosser (me), commuters, gravel bikers, indoor trainers, and what have you.

No need to get snippy after the “Danish experiment” went sideways.

I was halfway through when I realized the proper question is "Are you a Serious Cyclist™."
Of course, the "Serious Forum Posters™" here picked up on it right away.

The fact remains that any one that pedals a machine with 1, 2, 3, or 4 wheels is a cyclist. That includes my 5 year old grandson to the winner of the Tour de France this year.
For wanna be bike racers boyz to think that the title cyclist applies to only them, is total and foolish snobbery. To put it bluntly guys, you are no where near being special as you think you are!!!!

Everyone who rides a bike is a cyclist, at least while they're riding. Now, "serious" might be up for discussion. As a commuter/transportation cyclist, the guy in the video has at least a passing familiarity with traffic laws. Compared to the homeless guy who rides against traffic, unlit, after dark, to the quick-stop to get ciggies, he's an absolute god of cycling. In fact, whether or not he considers himself a cyclist, I think commuting by bike makes him pretty impressive, regardless of his motivations.

There are pedals in/on other things than bicycles. Cars, for instance, some kayaks - both for propulsion and for steering, some rubbish tins (garbage cans), a dentist's drill. A sewing machine. And plenty more.

Nah. There are cyclists and then there are ‘bike riders’ or ‘Sunday cyclists’. One has a higher degree of commitment and dedication but I just can’t figure out which one. Wink. Since the common definition here is so diluted that anyone on wheels is a cyclist and I don’t ride a tri or uni I am a bicycle rider. Let the festivities and fireworks begin! Yes this is a setup.

Just like "the human race" is an umbrella term, "Americans" being a subset of that while still being an umbrella term that can be futher divided into many, many subsets: rich, poor, politicans/non-politicians, factory workers, office workers, city dwellers, rural people, fat people/underweight people, you name it. It doesn't matter which subset you fit or how many subsets you fit, you're still American, and you're still of the human race.
There is no "dilution" there. It means someone "cycling" - i.e. they're on a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle, or how many wheels you care to add. It's all cycling. They are all cyclists.
Btw, what was that "Danish experiment" you referred to in earlier post?

OK, we can then define a pedalist as someone who uses pedals to propel a wheeled vehicle. But what about an amputee who rides a hand propelled cycle? Do they use hand pedals?

Depends on the dictionary.
The six out of ten I just looked at define cyclist as either a bicycle and or motorcycle rider. And that’s that. period. end of discussion. Finito. Don’t you just love it when someone thinks they know it all and tries to get the last word and tries to shut down the debate? I don’t. Too much of a power play. Not advisable with loved ones or casual acquaintances unless you want to look like a gentleman part. With my response above I now look like several gentleman parts.
P.S. I am a bicyclist to be specific and a cyclist to be very non-specific according to the word informally embraced here.

[QUOTE=CargoDane;21801411]It is not "diluted" to use "cyclist" to mean anyone on a bicycle/tricycle and whatnot. It's an umbrella-term. Just like "pedestrian" and "motorist". Hell, even "motorcyclist" is an umbrella term. Your level of "dedication" bears no bearing on this, as that it is merely a subset of "cyclists". You say that there is such a thing as "bike riders". Yes, there is indeed. "bike" is short for "bicycle" = "bicycle rider" = cyclists. You can also "ride" on a motorcycle, as a passenger in a plane, or on an inflatable banana behind a speedboat.
CD I should have written Swedish Experiment. I am old a feeble and want out of the human race. So why the strong feelings about a totally inconsequential term in the scope of our lives? I could see an argument about COVID, human slavery, climate change, etc. FYI Half of what I write is tongue in cheek or for my amusement.
