Roof rack and carbon frame bikes
After loading my carbon frame bike on the roof rack for the first time today, I started thinking if this kind of roof rack that grip the down tube is bad for the carbon frame? Or am I just over reacting?

I thought the same thing. While the clamp doesn't seem to pinch the downtube that hard, I decided not to take any chances. I bought a Thule fork mount carrier off ebay for $25.

Yeah I'd get a fork mount. I don't want to think of the amount of stress being placed on that tube when you're cornering..............funky looking rack though!

It's not just carbon frames I'd worry about but any frame. Modern roadbike frames sometimes use tubes so thin that regardless of the material, clamping to them is not a good idea. I wish roof rack manufacturers would start producing extensible arms that can clamp to the seatpost. The alternative is the Sportworks roof rack which clamps to the wheel.

I really wouldn't worry about it. The bike isn't made of paper, and the frame can stand some pressure. Though in terms of stability, I like fork mounts better.

I took your advice guys, today I went to the VW dealer and asked them if I can swap for the fork mount rack, parts guy was very helpful and said no problems, tomorrow I should have the fork mount, even exchange.

I would be more worried about a stone flying off the back of a dump truck, and shattering the headtube and fork at 80 km/h.
