Can you say no to a 50 $ De Rosa
Very very bad flaking paint but nice chrome. Indexing headset and weird brake handles, but still a good deal. RD datecode 83. Large frame for me but I can ride it.

I can think of one DeRosa I’d turn down at $50, but this is steel.

For 50 bucks I'd buy it but I'd do a lot of research to see if it was stolen afterwards. If it was, I'd return it to the owner and give the seller's info to the police. This is a small community of folks, nobody deserves to lose their bike to theft, especially a bike like that.

So this has been asked before probably, but what are the ethics of someone clearly selling a bike for far less than it's value? Assuming this isn't stolen, if an old lady is selling an old Frejus for $50 because she has no idea what old bikes cost, is there a right thing to do, or is it just "welp"

Last year or so, I was out riding and a guy caught up to me to complement me on my nice looking bike (my Carrera). We chatted, he was riding Campy, so we bonded on that. He had just upgraded to 11 speed and asked me if I wanted his old 10 speed parts. Hell yeah! So we met up and he gave me a box full of 10 speed Chorus and Daytona parts. There was also a Chorus Titanium post in there and I told him I couldn’t take it, it was worth too much. I helped him sell it along with some more Record parts on Paceline.
Nice find OP, the RD is worth the entry price for the whole bike!

This bike has done a lot of miles and needs a ton of work. The guy I bught it from had got it for free and was not a bicycle guy. He did not like riding a large roadbike with an indexing headset and decided to sell it on our Craigslist without doing any research. I talked to him just after it was listed and he was very surprised at the number of people interested. I was first in line and he was a straight guy and stood by his asking price. The going price here in Norway for a bike like this would probably be 150-200 $ and he was offered that as I was driving to pick up the bike directly after closing the deal. At my workplace we have been given 15 000 $ by a charity to provide refurbished bikes to our members (people with mental health issues) as a Covid19 measure. I like buying used bikes and fixing thm up and this is one of 25 bikes I have bought the last month. I do my best to buy legit bikes and I got only ok vibes from this guy.

Congratulation on your deal.
It is a lovely bike.
I got myself recently a 1995 De rosa Giro d'italia in almost perfect condition for 200€.
It came to me immediately the same old question. Stolen or not. ???
I could have refused the deal, but someone else would have picked the bike.
I informed the seller that it could sell it for more money, but it was okay for him to sell it at this price because it pay the same price for it from a friend, just to try if he could enjoy road bike . this bike was clearly too big for the seller, so he decided to sell it and purchase a nice bike with the right dimension.
After that, I told him that I will take the bike only if I could pick it up in person at his adress, (just in case I may had trouble in the future). No problem for him, very nice guy I must say.
Finally, I shared pictures of my purchase in forums (in france). If someone recognize his bike and can prove without any doubt it is stolen, of course it will be given back without any problem.
I think sharing pictures in such case is the best way to prove that you are honest.
We can find everyday good opportunities if we are good looking at what is available.
A lot of people ignore totally what they are selling.

Yea it was a gift. Christmas came early! I had a similar experience a few years ago when I went to pick up a $15 Campy NR RD from a guy 30+ miles away. My wife thought I was crazy to drive that far for a $!5 bike part. I agreed and went anyway. When I arrived , he was in his driveway with boxes everywhere as he was moving. He was a trim 70 year old guy and he handed me a 1972 derailleur that was in fine shape and said it was from his early days of racing on his Frejus , would I be interested in the wheels? A nice set of Rigida's with Stella butted spokes laced to Campy HF hubs. He said $40 ....FOR THE PAIR! I said you are giving this stuff away and can I give you more? He said no , but would you take this box of spares , I really don't have any use for them. The box was amazing, I actually didn't even look through it as he was in the middle of his move . When I got home, OMG ,Campy tools, seats , Campy brake parts , freewheels , chains (not worn out), bags of nuts and fasteners , spare bottom brackets, all nice stuff! Sometimes when it is too good to be true , it isn't!
