Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Gonna kick of an evening of bicycle maintenance work this evening.

Gotta tension my saddle on the Raleigh (it's so loose, the tensioner bolt is rattling around on rough roads/non-roads).
New chain on the Bridgestone MB-3.
Replace a tube on the Basso:

That's why I phrased it like that - he was afraid of one doing it/I was having one just watching.

Funny thing about Zwift avatars is that although Zwift uses your height and weight to create your avatar - in my case 6' and 207# - what it comes up with distributes the weight more fetchingly. Hence, my avatar has Popeye arms, and not a beer belly.

Also, "Balding" is not an option, so I went with the least amount of hair shy of shaved head. Mrs. GeneJockey says, however, that my avatar doesn't need to look like me, so maybe I'll go with flowing locks and a full beard, unless Zwift applies an aero penalty for that..........

I don't get how cyclists can have facial hair and yet be compelled to shave their legs for an "aero advantage."

Aero advantage? I just shave my legs 'cause they're dead sexy.

The real answer is: there are multiple, rational reasons to shave, though they might not apply to you. Asking about those reasons would probably be better than assumption and derision.

Replace a tube on the Basso:
Did some tube patching yesterday, among other things. Got a flat on Tuesday. We were climbing a steep ramp out of the Rose Bowl and caught a woman on a touring bike looking thing. She was very friendly with both of us so I started hammering and we dropped her on the long gradual climb. Then I flatted and was almost done fixing it when she caught up. I teased her a bit and she laughed and motored out of sight.

I recommended we chase her down when I finally got the wheel back on the bike, so we did. We were within yards of catching up when I flatted again. Seems I had done a piss poor job of patching the spare tube I was carrying. My friend gave me one of his tubes and said I ruined his chance of asking her for a date. I told him to go and I would see him later, but he stayed and we didn't see her again.

Interestingly, there's not a choice of hirsuteness for legs in Zwift. I'd imagine the MTB side would go full simian.

I know the reasons (road rash repair, message, etc.), and I'm not talking about whether it's something I should or should not do. I'm aware of the wind tunnel tests showing that there is an aero advantage to shaved legs. I'm not mocking it, but for pros seeking aero advantages at every corner, it seems that facial hair would be giving up some of that advantage.

From one article: "Smooth legs have also been proven to be more aerodynamic saving precious seconds when you are trying to go fast. Specialized wind tunnels test showed that a rider could gain one minute or even as much as 90 seconds over 40 km with shaved compared to hairy legs."

As for sexiness, mine are about as sexy as they ever will be, even if that is not much.

I wonder if Laurent Fignon ever rue's his flowing locks.

He may have while he was alive. Considering he lost the TDF by 8 seconds (?) they say if he had gone aero for that TT he would have won.
