Chain "Tattoo"...
How do I avoid them? What am I doing wrong? I'm not talking just a little bit of grease, but a lot! I get teased about it mercilessly. I try to keep my chain really clean, but to no avail. I tried using White Lightning for a while and it helped, but I don't really like it as a lube. This is really embarrassing and I want it to stop!

get into the habit of alwasy unclipping your left foot first when ever you stop. That should solve your problem.

Take off the chain. Less grease build-up.

Umm... Thanks, all.
Yes, during the winter the black tights/leg warmers did effectively deal with the problem.
And while I do appreciate those occasional "no chain" days, I don't really think a chainless bike will work very well for the long haul.
Unless you mean remove it for cleaning? I just clean the chain while it's on the bike. I will look into getting a master link.
And the suggestion to not ride the bike?
Not an option. I'll just put up with the "newbie" teasing !
I do clip out with the right leg first. It will be hard trying to train myself to clip out with the left first. I foresee some clip-out spills in my future...

Get a real tattoo on the inside of your right leg. Bonus points if you get a tattoo of chain marks.
