Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Masi Gran Criterium

https://www.masibikes.com/framesets/g...iterium-frame/

I've been looking for an affordable lugged steel frameset for a long time now. I think this Masi is what I'm looking for. I like the fact that this frameset has the classic lugged styling, but it's built to work with modern components. At $650 MSRP this seems like a very good value. Heck, you can hardly get an old beat up Coppi, Bianchi, or Ciocc frameset for that price on eBay.

Problem is I can't seem to find these in stock anywhere. Who's got 'em?

Also, does anyone know what colors this frameset is available in?

Thanks in advance!

That's interesting. I have an '05 Masi Gran Criterium S that has an Aluminum frame with CF forks, seat stays and chain stays. With Dura Ace gruppo but w/o pedals it weighs 17 lbs. Is this Masi steel frame one of the "light weight" steel frames?

Then there is this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/torelli...41925411/show/

I don't doubt that those products are superior, but that is one of the worst websites I've visited this year.

I read the article, but I'm not understanding what a "real" Masi is. Do you mean hold out for one made back in the day, or are you saying to find one that says "Milano" instead of "Masi?"

Yes. A real Masi would be one made by Mr. Masi.

But it's interesting to read the two different stories told.
One says that he retired quietly to Italy. The other says it wasn't so nice.

One says, "To copy is to steal."
The other says, 'we learned from the master'.

One thing I like about the "fake" Masi is that they are one of the few manufacturers that still mass produce an economical steel ride that actually has a decent ride. And yes, I'm aware of Surly etc. but options are nice. FYI, they usually only offer one color per model year. So if you don't like black, wait until the 2012's come out.

Well, they're all "real Masis" - but some are better than others. "Mr. Masi" doesn't build all those Milano frames individually by his own self. Just as in the day, many - probably the vast majority - are outsourced. Just as when Faliero was running the show - at least by the 60's. But they are designed by him and meet his standards, presumably. Just as when Faliero was running the show.

Here's a couple of more options for a new, cheap lugged frame:

https://www.bikemania.biz/ProductDeta...e=Soma_Stanyan

https://bikesdirect.com/products/moto...premio_pro.htm
(whole bike but still cheap)

https://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.asp?Item=100056741

Also, GVH periodically has lugged Viners for $500+.

The "Masi" name in North America is owned by Haro, the BMX company. Bikes marketed under the Masi name in North America have no relation to the Masi family and their history in frame building.

If you think a "Masi" bike has a heritage that makes it more desirable than other, generically designed bikes on the market, you should opt for a "Milano3v" instead.

All we're saying is that the farther you get away from the original, the more the deviation/variation from that original.

My old Colnago wasn't made by Ernesto, but my old Motobecane also wasn't a BikesDirect rip.

Your poor parents.

The steel Gran Crit. must be new this year - last year it was Carbon, IIRC. They're obviously trying to play off Breaking Away - but it seems to only come in black, which is strange. You would think the would offer orange, at least.

Did you try the dealer locater?

https://www.masibikes.com/customer-se...ealer-locator/

Masi has a pretty nice selection and good value.

OP the frame seems like a good value, which is where "modern" Masi has placed themselves in the market. They actually sell more steel bikes than any other material. Jamis would be another steel option but only as a built bike.

I have a 2002 Gran Crit which is constructed with the Easton Scandium tube set. The paint is all chipped up but the bike is a joy to ride and totally rocks.

The Masi is cool, but for my money this is the coolest affordable mass-produced steel bike: https://www.bianchiusa.com/bikes/gran-fondo/vigorelli/

I'll pass on the Bianchi. TIG welded frames don't have the same sex appeal as a lugged frame does. I also want a traditional non-sloping TT. My R3 has a sloping TT so I'm looking for something more traditional for this build.
