Tape over grips

I wasn't happy with these grips I have on my old 80s mountain bike. So I put tape over them and they feel pretty good. But I'm not sure if I like the electrical tape securing it,and I thought I'd try to do a better job. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to secure the bar tape over your typical handlebar rips. I know rivendell has some fetish with twine, I wonder if there any other suggestions from you guys ...thanks.

I’ve used self fusing silicon tape for just this purpose. There’s no adhesive so it never gets gummy under your hands. Comes in primary colors & black. I’ve also used the twine. The twine is definitely more permanent, but you have to accept the look of it.

Wrap from the inner portion of the grip out towards the end, and finish by tucking the end of the tape into the bar end, secured with the plug. No tape necessary.

Good old cotton handlebar wrap material. You can either contact cement it or go old school with shellac.
