Bianchi

Are Bianchi bikes over rated?I always admired the Celeste ,at first I didn't like it but the more one looks at the bike the more one wants it.There is one for sale near me,down tube shifters so it's old.Looks in fair to good condition.Money is no object.I just have to take the money I've been saving for a boat for 45 years and spend it on the bike. The bike has the Shamano 600 set.Ill be honest I really want a Celeste Bianchi in mint condition.Screw the boat".

Photos?
Model?
Complete configuration? Sewups? Do you want sewups?
Made in the USA? Made in China/Taiwan?
PRICE?

Colnago only made mid to upper level bikes.
On the other hand, Bianchi made the full gambit from junk to top of the line race bikes.
Many of the European Bianchis were made in Italy. However, BianchiUSA imported a lot of bikes from Asia, so those get diluted here in the USA.

I would first figure out if it's your size. Sounds like a traditional perfectly horizontal top tubed bike. One simple rule is to adjust the seat to your liking and then measure the amount of seat post showing. Preferably, you want less head tube length than seat post showing. For instance if you have an inch of post and six inches of head tube then the bike is way too big. Good luck.

I don't want to put you off getting an old one, but keep this in mind when figuring out a decent price:

Purchased my lady friend an Infinito a couple years ago. Full Ultegra. Nice package and works just fine. It's a snappy looking bike. Must be the celeste. I'd get one for myself, except that they seem to have minimized the celeste scheme. That's part of the mystique of the marque.

Bianchi had one of those in their exhibit at the Toronto Bicycle Show this past spring. Needless to say, their modern carbon wonders did not get near the attention this one did.

Just go for it. Italian beauty is a gift to behold and a joy to ride.

Take it from an old sailor, re the boat = unless you live on it, there's an anchor (of some sort) around your neck.

edit: i bought an old steel beauty from Italy (NOS) and dressed it in Campy 10. And ain't nothin wrong with downtube shifters.

You don't have to go old Bianchi if you don't want to. I have wanted a celeste bike forever, after seeing a row of them in some probably long gone bicycle shop in San Francisco in the mid 70's with my dad. Man I lusted after those.
...Took this long lol.
I just picked up the Tipo Corsa frameset. Yes asian made. But from what I am hearing, the asians are hand building to high quality standards today. And my brand new custom, not ridden yet (!) Bianchi is a work of art.
You have a couple of paths...

Although I have an Italian-made Bianchi with the associated snob appeal, I fully admit that the Japanese Bianchis are probably just as good, if not even better, because of superior metallurgy and ISO-standard threads and diameters. The Japanese Bianchis share the Italian frames' geometries, which are what give these bikes their famous balance of comfort and performance. Find one that fits you, and go for it.

600-level stuff is fine, and it spanned a few years. When one thinks Bianchi, doesn't one expect to find Campagnolo Nuovo Record? Phil

Oh man ... you're singing my song. I too have a soft spot for a classic Celeste Bianchi. I think I'll want Campy on it, though.

I agree with you ... screw the boat.

I went to a Bianchi shop about ten years ago. I was carefully measured for a 55 cm Bianchi. I never got used to the long top tube combined with SORA shifters. I subsequently purchased an old school 54 cm Miyata with Shimano 600 down tube shifters. I fell in love. Nice soft ride. I got rid of the Bianchi shortly there after.

Yes it is. I really like the retro-looking decals and white head tube.

Top tube length is indeed one of the most important parameters when seeking a bicycle that fits you properly, although you can sometimes compensate for a long top tube with a short-reach handlebar stem, as I did with my Peugeot PKN-10. Fortunately, my 55cm C-T Bianchi and my 55cm C-T Capos are all very close to my ideal in top tube length, although the Bianchi uses 73 degree angles, instead of 72.
