Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Nothing wrong with your reading comprehension, that's exactly what it is. When cycling in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz foot hills, you are either busting your ass climbing a grade or hauling ass down one - the 60/30 ratio makes that possible.

Forgive me for asking, but what is this 60/30 gear equivalent to? Not sure how to break it down exactly.

BikeCalc.com - Bicycle Gear Ratio Chart

40-20, 36-18, etc. will accomplish the same ratio without looking so ridiculous. Parts will also be cheaper, lighter, and likely stronger. Although, there could be some wrinkle I am overlooking with the belt drive setup. Maybe.

I like the way that 60/30 looks... it says "Yeah, I'm a belt drive - deal with it"

Huh...sometimes the lack of bicycling savvy here is astounding

It is, or should be, common knowledge among us "bike experts" that Gates drives are built around bigger rings & cogs, hence OP's seemingly odd huge chain(?)ring/cog

But FYI...with all else being equal - gear inches for 60/30 is exactly the same as same any other 2/1 ratio

That being said - wow, @The Pusher Man, you are riding amazingly small gearing, much smaller than the 60/22 comes stock on a Schindelhauer - I take it you like to spin?

jtbadge, yep your logic is riddled with wrinkles, ride a belt for awhile and then you'll get it.

DiabloScott, the 60/30 was carefully thought through because the 60/22 was just too tall for the hills where I ride, but your spin on it is ok too

Unkle Rico it's a Hochfflansch flip-flop rear hub, the rear cog is a 9-spline that slides on and locked down via lockring.

steve-in-kville, thank you and yes that's a head light, to be exact a Bontrager Ion 700

IAmSam, the Viktor "stock" is a 60/22 which is a nice overall ratio for a single-speed. Other Schindelhauers may go smaller but for my purposes the bike has to let me climb some insane grades. Elevation changes of 2000 feet in 5 miles are not uncommon. With the 60/30 setup you can bet I'm not riding it as a fixie, if I'm going to hump it over a 2000 foot climb, you can bet I'm going to ENJOY the reward of coasting down the back side like a bat out of hell - and not limited by a 60/30 fixed gear top end.

Not right now. Once I pick up some drops I'll have a better feel about what height I need. Considering how tall the headtube is though I can see leaving the stem slammed.

Is that a KORE stem? I have a black one with some +/- if you are running a 25.4 bar still. PM me and we can work it out.

Quick shots of my Soma Rush. Nice ride so far. Week so far going everywhere and it certainly makes me look forward to the summer.

Bullhorns will stay for awhile but the saddles will change to one of the Brooks swifts or a Turbo Bernard H.
later will switch to the Cinelli Crit bars see how I like them.

Build was easy with no problems. Frame size is a 55, which is perfect for my dimensions. Have to wait a few more days til the track cog and lock ring get here for some fix work fun. Right now it has a 17t Shimano freewheel on and the IRD Defiant 46t crank. Good gear for the coast.

wheels are Contis on Mavic CXP 22 and Origin/formula hubs. Stem a 27.2 GPM. Pedals are MKS G 9. Bars Profil airwings. Lever cane creek. Everything came from my parts bin so frame was a cost item. It came from Retro... Great service and price to boot !

This will share ride duty with my SSFG cyc cross motobecane and a fixed conversion road bike for rain days.

Thanks for looking !
