So I got a raise / promotion today. It was a nice surprise. My boss said I was going to get one soon but that's protocol to get rid of an employee who's asking about money. Some people have been about to get a promotion 'soon' for a few years.
This almost offsets the 10% cut we got in July, but I appreciate the recognition more than anything.

I'm not terribly worried about Ebola. It's just the disease of the week, if you will. A few years ago it was swine flu. Before that, avian flu. Before that, SARS. And I'm still waiting for the killer bees from Mexico to come up to the US and get us all. The national media, and local media following their lead, love to hype up the dangers of new diseases.
Several years ago, when Avian Flu was the disease of the week, I sat on a panel of reporters discussing how public officials could do a better job dealing with crisis communications. The panel was moderated by a guy from the CDC. Someone asked if we, the reporters, were worried about Avian flu. I was the only one to say No, and my reasoning was simply that the national media needed something to hype, and disease were an easy target. The CDC guy told me I should be worried and that avian flu was different. He was wrong.

i may or may not have this poster on my bedroom wall.
seriously, though, i remember reading about him as a cyclist in some sort of hard-hitting journalistic work from the likes of bicycling.... i looked him up a few years ago. it was easier to see results on USAC then. at the time i remembered seeing he was racing as a 2 but appeared to have skipped some steps. now i can't tell what's what.

Computer question.
My only computer is an almost five-year-old Toshiba laptop, still running Vista, and using Office 2007; I don't use anything more complicated. It still runs fine. Is there a rational basis for an upgrade (other than the OS), or should I just use it until it croaks and then get a new one?

If you don't mind the long start up times (mine took forever to load with Vista), I'd say make sure you have a good external hard drive that you back everything up to once a week, and then ride it until it's no longer usable. But then I'm cheap.

If its running Windows XP and you are connecting it to the Internet you are taking a risk. If its running Windows 7 then you are OK for a while. The rest is dependent on what you expect for performance.

I'm on my 9th service manager at work. This guy has been there about 4 months and things have gone downhill fast. Our customer satisfaction has gone from 95 to 56. This is huge and costs the company many $1000s. First big blunder (although I can't blame it all on the manager) was losing the transmission tech. Can't find another one, even after 4 months.
Next, the fool took the young electrician/computer specialist aside to lecture him about his smart mouth. He told the kid "I can replace you instantly!"
Guess what? No, you can't. The kid quit after that exchange and this was a huge blow to the shop.
I went to the owner myself to express my distrust and lack of faith in the manager and the result was a shop meeting the next day to assure us what a good manager he was.
I next went to the general manager, the guy is known for getting rid of bad managers, and he told me not to rush things, that he was watching, and he offered me a raise to stay on board. Well, a week later the general manager quit. There goes my raise and my hope of getting a new service manager.

That right there should be enough of a reason to can the guy.

MRA of my hip is scheduled for Monday. I'm hoping it isnt what I think it is, but at least if it is it would finally give me an answer as to why my leg/hip has been bothering me all year. Unfortunately the only fix would be surgery and up to a few months of recovery (from what im finding online)..

I haven't even gone to mavericks. I have too much software, including parallels, that won't run on it.

Fine. It's geek time.
I just moved my Nexus 4 from Dalvik to ART. Holy crap it's fast. Bumped my benchmarks from Galaxy S3 to Galaxy S4, just by clicking a radio button and rebooting. Maybe I should hang onto this phone for another year.
The Nexus 6 is attractive, but I'm not sure about riding with it, given its size.

You'd think. When I brought this up they said everyone's CSI is down because of the recalls. I asked our G.M. rep about that and he said CSI is down a "little" in general, but nothing like ours is.
