.. Do I really need a chain tool? I guess this procedure will work, right?

You need a chain tool to cut the chain to the correct length.

If you are going to ride and fix your bikes there are several "must have" tools and one of those tools is the chain tool. There are really only a few other must have tools like a set of metric hex keys. I highly recommend that you pick up a repair manual such as the one by Howard Zinn or the Park Tool company.

Most of us keep a few consumable items such as brake and shifter cables, inner tubes and brake pads on hand. Along with that a good idea to keep one or two spare chains.

Thanks to everyone's help she's fixed one week after the accident..If I had sent her to a bike shop, I'd have gotten her back in November
Needs some more tuning, because she hopped on the downshift
Should I take her for a test drive first?.
I've been told when you put some weight on the bike and force in the drivetrain, she behaves differently
If anything seems wrong , please let me know.
